Calgary General Hospital Project Survey Results

by Deb Lee, BRCA, CGH Commemoration Project

Thank you to all those who completed the survey about the Calgary General Hospital Commemoration Project – 539 respondents. The project is planned as an enhancement to the northwest corner of Murdoch Park.

Here’s what we learned:

• 48 % are current residents of Bridgeland.

• 36 % visit daily or weekly, while 47% visit occasionally or not at all.

• 95 % were somewhat or very familiar with the history of the Calgary General Hospital.

• Top three current activities: walk alone (52%), purchase from nearby businesses (49%), sit or relax on the benches (45%).

• 86% said it was somewhat or very important to tell the story of the General Hospital.

• 81% somewhat or strongly support City funding for the project; 8% oppose.

• The top four design features: Trees and vegetation (72%); Interpretive plaques/storyboards (69%); Memorial wall/timeline (69%); Crime prevention through environmental design (57%).

• The biggest benefit: It preserves the community (Bridgeland and Calgary) history (92%).

• 47% will visit Murdoch Park more often when the Commemorative Plaza is completed.

Respondents made 163 additional comments, most of which were very supportive. We also value the comments that pointed out potential issues to be addressed.

The survey results will be very helpful to us as we continue raising awareness, planning, and fundraising for the project. Thank you, everyone!

We had the draw, and ten people won gift certificates to Bridgeland businesses. Congratulations to Louise W., Lori S., Doreen M., Michel G., Joanne S., Nicole M., Coral C., Teresa H., Catherine L., and Elizabeth R.
