Hot enough for you? Having been through many, many long cold Calgary winters, I know better than to complain about hot summer days and nights. However, for the sake of our newly planted sod at the Community Hall (and the gardens and lawns in our neighbourhood), I’m hoping that, by the time this issue of the newsletter reaches you, the temperatures have cooled a bit and all water restrictions have been lifted. Laura McLeod’s article on the “urban heat island effect” is timely and also serves to remind us of the importance of maintaining and increasing our green spaces. The additional trees that will come with the Main Streets project will add to the tree canopy that is so important in cooling our city and purifying our air.
I had the pleasure of enjoying the company of a group of dedicated volunteers during a shift at the BRCA’s recent casino. The funds we receive from the casinos we do once every 18 months form a significant part of the revenue that funds the BRCA. I want to thank all the volunteers who contributed their time to this important fundraising event.
I also want to thank our neighbours at The Bridge for their recent donation to the BRCA and for their continued support of the community. A tip of the cowboy hat and thanks also to all the organizations and businesses that treated the community to Stampede breakfasts. We are blessed to live in a very giving neighbourhood.
We continue to look for volunteers to assist us with our various events and committees, so I encourage you to consider getting involved.
There is a lot happening here during the remainder of the summer. Farmers’ Market continues every Thursday until October 3 and features a “Taste of the Market” on August 15 to celebrate Alberta Local Food Week. The Bridgeland Walks program runs every Wednesday evening and provides a great opportunity to learn about the neighbourhood while getting some exercise at the same time.
Speaking of exercise, take advantage of the warm summer days and evenings to get out and enjoy one (or all) of our great ice cream and gelato shops. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
