Bridgeland’s President’s Message for June

My attempts to come up with a theme for this issue’s column have failed me, so I’m going to deliver a potpourri of random musings, in no particular order of importance.

We had a very successful Community Cleanup on May 10. We were blessed with lovely weather and a great turnout of enthusiastic “pickers” of all ages. On behalf of the BRCA, I want to thank everyone who came out to help keep our neighbourhood tidy and the many volunteers who contributed time and effort to organizing and coordinating this event.

As we enter summer, I am mindful of our ever-changing weather. The crab apple trees in Murdoch Park were in full bloom on the May long weekend when, in the space of ten minutes, a hailstorm brought down enough ice to allow for tobogganing and to cover the paths with pink petals. All the more reason to enjoy the nice days when we can.

Traffic continues to be an issue in our community. The 4 Avenue flyover construction continues, and the Main Street and ENMAX resume on First Avenue. The City advises us that all these projects are expected to be completed by this fall. I have just noticed the installation of pedestrian crossing lights at 9 Street and First Avenue, and the City has provided notice that the stop signs at several intersections along Second Avenue will change. Please be patient and careful as motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians adjust to these changes. While this work has led to increased traffic and inconvenience (particularly for impacted businesses), I appreciate the efforts the City has made to keep the community informed of the progress of these projects and the changes they will bring.

With one election down, and one to go, it’s safe to say we definitely live in interesting—and changing—times. We have a new Member of Parliament and will have a new Councillor in Ward 9 following October’s civic election. I hope the high turnout for the federal election carries over to the municipal election as there are many important issues facing communities in Calgary.

Speaking of elections, I hope to see many of you at the BRCA Annual General Meeting on June 12, starting at 6:30 pm at the hall. The AGM is open to all members and memberships can be obtained at the door.
