How long have you lived in Bridgeland-Riverside?
I have lived in Bridgeland with my partner and dog for two years now. Previously I lived in Renfrew for four years and I always loved adventuring down to Bridgeland. I love the accessibility of the community, eating at my favourite restaurants in the area, and the charm of Bridgeland.
How did you get involved in volunteering in our community?
I have always been one to volunteer since I was young. It is a wonderful way to meet people and make connections. When I officially moved to Bridgeland I wanted to give back to something close to me. Bridgeland wouldn’t be as amazing as it is, without all the dedicated community members and volunteers that work so hard to make it desirable and I just knew I had to be a part of it.
What kind of volunteer activities have you done?
I initially got engaged through the Safety Meetings when the dog walking safety initiative was being established. It felt like a natural task to participate in because I walk the community daily with my four-legged best friend. I agreed to take the lead on the DOGOS (Dogs and Owners Going Out for Safety) and have been doing that for about a year. I have been able to meet so many neighbours through volunteering and DOGOS. My partner and I have also participated in the annual community clean-ups since we moved here.
What ideas do you have for volunteering in the future? What interests or excites you?
I am eager to see how the BRCA continues to grow and increase community members’ involvement. With the growth anticipated in Bridgeland, there are so many opportunities for the community to come together for meaningful connections and activities. The sense of community in Bridgeland is so unique for a big city. It excites me to always try new things for the community, see what new beautification will occur in the area and prioritize safety initiatives for people to participate in.
What would you tell others in the community about volunteering?
Volunteering is such a rewarding activity, I think it’s very important to know who your neighbours are, and this is the easiest way to do it. Plus, there are volunteer opportunities for all types of abilities and time commitments. If you have been thinking about participating in the community, there is no better time than spring clean-up and the beginning of festival/farmers market season.
What do you like most about volunteering for the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association?
The community and board members are so kind with a wealth of knowledge and passion for the community. Belonging to something can be so impactful to mental health and the BRCA does an amazing job of providing local opportunities for connection and purpose.
What is a hidden gem in Bridgeland-Riverside that you have discovered?
Bridgeland-Riverside has so many gems! There are two favourite activities that I do as much as possible. The first being, walking in the Murdoch Park area during sunrise with my dog. You can spot the most beautiful skies, the melding of the General Hospital Landmark with the cityscape in the background and the sounds of birds chirping. Second, a sunrise walk for ice cream with my partner and our dog (even in the cold temperatures). The peace and joy these two things bring to me are the best way to start and end my day and one reason that makes Bridgeland so amazing.
