President’s Message
Does April really herald the end of winter and the beginning of spring? I sure hope so. Although we know that we are bound to see a few more snowflakes we can also hope for robins, crocuses, and the other signs that spring is on its way.
I’d like to start this message with some thanks to the associations, businesses, and individuals who support ECA programs. Thanks to the following:
· The Al Azhar Shriners (Tin Lizzie Corp) Society for their generous support of the Breakfast Club. Their donation means that we can move closer toward food security for all Edgemont residents and children going to school to learn with full tummies.
· Volunteers supporting learning opportunities at Edgeburn Lane have launched a Reading Club. If a youngster in your family could use reading practice and some mentorship, contact the ECA Office for information on how to enrol and have an elementary student matched with a reading mentor.
· Thanks to the organizers of our recent Lego Mania. The event was a wonderful time bringing families together in our community and shone a light on the many talents of the participants. Thanks to all the volunteers and our sponsors: Matthew Halladay and Craig Lamb Realtors, and Shomna Verma, Financial Advisor, who helped make this day a success.
· Thanks to the students from Winston Churchill High School for helping with Frost Fest. We were fortunate with the weather that enabled families to get out to enjoy some outdoor fun as well as Timbits and hot chocolate. Once again, Matthew Halladay and Craig Lamb Realtors stepped up as sponsors.
March saw the launch of our Pageantry Flag Contest. This is a first for Edgemont. This year’s theme is “For the Love of Edgemont.” Edgemont residents of all ages can enter. The submission deadline for ECA to receive your designs is May 15. Winning designs will be awarded prizes, and the designs will be printed on flags to be displayed on light posts around our community. Full contest details can be found at https://edgemont.getcommunal.com/parent_programs or email [email protected].
Thanks to Tracy Grills for facilitating the seed starting and indoor growing seminar on March 15. I trust participants gleaned important information on starting seeds, how to ensure the proper lighting to encourage good growth and other handy tips for a healthy garden.
Are you mad about jazz? ECA will be hosting its first jazz night on April 17. Doors open at 7:00 pm and music starts at 7:30 pm. This is a live 20+ piece band with vocalists. There will be a dance floor for those who want more than just toe tapping. Tickets are $25 and include snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic). Ticket holders are welcome to bring their own alcohol. Registration is a must! Get your tickets here: https://edgemont.getcommunal.com/parent_programs/2909.
Save Saturday, May 9 for our Mother’s Day Magic Event. This is a new way for us to celebrate moms. The event will start at 10:00 am and run until 1:30 pm. We will be featuring Christopher Cool, a well-known Calgary magician, who will dazzle with a 40-minute magic show. Can you figure out how he does it? That’s a challenge. There will also be fun activities for kids and families with refreshments and snacks courtesy of ECA. Once again, ECA thanks Matthew Halladay and Craig Lamb Realtors, Shomna Verma (Financial Advisor), and the City of Calgary. Tickets are adults $5 and children $2. Registration opened March 1. Check social media and our website for more details and to register. Just a reminder that this event is on Saturday, not Mother’s Day Sunday.
Watch for details on Farm Stands at the ECA parking lot which usually get going in May and for information on the Nordic Rodeo and Stampede Breakfast which ECA typically hosts at the end of June to kick off Stampede. Details are currently being finalized and will be posted on the website and included in the next newsletter.
Parents looking for summer camp programs would be wise to check out the list of what’s available. You will find the list in this newsletter. There are some returning tried and true programs as well as many new ones. These camps are always sold out so watch the website for registration links and don’t wait!
For some reason, ECA has received a larger than usual number of development permits for home-based businesses and rentals in Edgemont. We have the opportunity to comment, which we do. If someone is wanting to extend an existing lease or get permission for a new one, they are required to post a sign on their front lawn, so their neighbours are aware. The information on that sign gives residents a link to where they can make their comments and concerns known to the City. Please use that opportunity. If you have concerns, you can send them to ECA care of Barb Elms, and she will include them in our comments as well. Barb can be reached at [email protected]. Parking always seems to be at the top of the list.
Lastly, Calgarians are facing water main issues again this year. I have been asked by the City to give our residents a heads up about what they can expect. The City of Calgary announced plans for the first phase of pipe reinforcement work for the Bearspaw Feeder Main. The complete update can be found here: https://newsroom.calgary.ca/city-of-calgary-proceeding-with-planned-reinforcements-to-the-bearspaw-south-feeder-main/. We are once again being asked to conserve water by taking the following actions:
· Keep showers short, three minutes or less.
· Flush toilets only when necessary.
· Only run dishwashers and washing machines when there is a full load.
In addition, we can expect a fall shutdown for more reinforcement work. Regular updates will be available here: https://www.calgary.ca/planning/water/bearspaw-feeder-main/reinforcements-project.html.
