A very cool start to February at the time of writing! On the positive side: this will keep our planters looking nice and green! In the meantime, not much is happening visibly on the ELM front; however, our ELM coordinator, Shari Pitka, is working very hard behind the scenes with Foothills Landscaping on our summer plans and projects! Below are a few highlights of what is on our agenda subject to constraints due to weather conditions and or City approval. Projects like fertilizing for instance, are conditional on City approval.
On the horizon:
• Aerating and fertilizing in the spring.
• Levelling of some of the planters.
• Revamping the flower bed at the bus stop on Edenwold Drive (near Edgemont Boulevard).
• Redesign of the flower bed on Edgebrook Drive.
• Addressing the lilac situation on Edenwold Drive (just past Mother Mary Green School) after the shrubs have finished blooming; this will include pruning and filling in some gaps with additional lilacs.
• Adding some Karl Foerster grasses in the tiered brick flower bed on Edgemont Boulevard to give it some height.
• Reviewing potential alternative methods of pest control.
As for your own yards, are you keeping an eye on the booking dates for the free green cart compost giveaway? As of February 1, there were no updates; however, it is best to keep checking: https://www.calgary.ca/waste/residential/green-cart-compost-giveaway.html.
A quick reminder that if you have any perennials to donate in spring, please contact us as soon as possible using the email address below, so our ELM coordinator can take your most appreciated donation into account when planning for next summer: [email protected].
Any concerns or questions regarding ELM, please contact us using the above email address and we will be very happy to respond to your concerns.
