Edgemont’s President’s Message for April

April always brings to mind warm thoughts of spring and renewal. Gardeners harbour notions of digging in the dirt and get anxious to see the first sprouts. We look forward to a few rainy days to wash the dust off and put a shine back on our community. Nose Hill Park is a great place to go searching for crocuses, those hardy little prairie flowers that poke their heads out from the snow. In some years you can find them on Edgevalley Drive on the hill adjacent to the school. Please enjoy them in place. No picking.

If you’ve been to the community centre, you will notice that we have done some spring cleaning and refreshing the inside of the building. The meeting rooms and hallways have been refreshed with a new coat of paint and the damaged ceiling tiles have been replaced. What a difference it makes! Consider using ECA for your next gathering. When it comes to the outside of the building, respect the picnic tables. They weren’t made for dancing on and please avoid walking through the flower beds. It’s likely the children that need the reminders.

Thanks to those volunteers who worked at our last casino. The cheque has arrived and ECA earned $82,956.03. That’s a tidy sum that we can put to good use. As many of you know, funds earned from casinos are restricted funds and there are a limited number of expenses that can be posted against the casino account. Maintenance of our facility is one of them.

Mother’s Day Tea will be held on Saturday, May 10. This year’s theme is “Tea by the Sea.” Register on the ECA website. There are tickets on sale for the event with registration limited to 50. The finger sandwiches and dainties are always yummy!

ECA will hold its AGM on Thursday, May 15 at ECC. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the meeting being called to order at 7:30 pm. It is always a challenge to have a quorum present at 7:30 pm, so I would encourage you to be on time. Memberships can be purchased onsite and those with valid memberships at the time the meeting is called to order can participate and vote during the meeting. The Board will be presenting its report for 2024 and also holding elections for the next slate of directors. Please contact Rick ([email protected]) for more information about submitting a nomination. In addition, special resolutions must be filed according to the regulations in our bylaws which include serving notice of the resolution at least 30 days prior to the meeting.

Thank you to all the Edgemont residents who let me know about the late delivery of the February newsletter. We will be meeting with our publisher to see what we can do to improve the distribution timeline. If you don’t have an email on file with the ECA office, send a message to [email protected] with a request for your email address to be added to our distribution list. Often, the electronic version of the newsletter is available well before we ever see the paper copy. A link to the online publication will be sent to you. We only use our distribution list to contact you about Edgemont related activities. The list is never sold.

In closing, there are two quotes that remind me why, even through the political turmoil around us, we must hold on to hope. Lady Bird Johnson said, “Where flowers bloom so does hope.” If we can find that hope we can smile like Doug Larson who advised, “Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush.”
