National Volunteer Week in 2025 was April 27 to May 3. This year’s theme was “Volunteers Make Waves” and we certainly know that’s the case in Edgemont. Each individual volunteer contribution creates momentum and has the power to influence and inspire, joining in a wave of positive change (reference: Volunteer.ca/national-volunteer-week/). ECA celebrated our volunteers with a Volunteer Recognition Supper on May 2 to thank those who selflessly give hours of their time to help ECA achieve its mission to foster a sense of community; to provide a leadership forum; and to enhance social, cultural, and recreational opportunities for the residents of our neighbourhood in a fiscally responsible manner.

We are hoping some residents are following our Community Asset Mapping Project. Join us for a Jane’s Walk on Saturday, May 3 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, starting at the Edgemont Community Centre entrance! As part of our Community Asset Mapping project, we’ll explore hidden gems in Edgemont and connect with neighbours. Sign-up isn’t required but helps us plan—watch the ECA website and socials for the link. Questions? Contact Joey at [email protected].

The City of Calgary hosted a pathway cleanup from May 2 to 4. Thanks to those who volunteered to help with these cleanup efforts.

Mother’s Day Tea will be held on Saturday, May 10. Tickets are available from the website or by calling the ECA office at 403-239-1211. This year’s theme is “Tea at the Sea.” I wonder if we’ll have any mermaids or mermen sipping tea with us? Thanks to a sponsorship from Dabs Fashola of One Percent Realty we will feature a photobooth with a themed backdrop. Attendees will go home with a strip of photos as a memento of the event. Thanks to Friends Café for working with us on the catering. There will be fresh scones with cream and jam to complement other savoury and sweet treats. We expect to hear music courtesy of Musicworks Canada – Edgemont. Volunteers will act as servers for the afternoon. Special thanks to Esther and the ECA office team for their help organizing this event!

I’m hoping members are planning to attend the AGM on May 15. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the meeting called to order at 7:30 pm. I know that AGMs aren’t at the top of the list when it comes to exciting social events, but we need the input of members to continue with programming that is community relevant and to monitor the use of community resources. If you are interested in serving on the Board, contact Rick at [email protected]. The agenda and other supporting documents will be circulated prior to the meeting and also posted on the website.

Looking forward, mark your calendars for June 28 (to be confirmed) for the ECA Stampede Breakfast. We are still looking for some pancake flippers/cooks. Contact Tina at [email protected] if you can help out that morning.

That’s the news for May!
