With the municipal election behind us, I just wanted to acknowledge those individuals who put their names forward for both City Councillor and School Board Trustee positions. It takes some gumption to stand for public office and to work to formulate policies that stand to make Calgary a better place. It also takes time and a sincere commitment to set aside that time to run an election campaign. At the time of writing this article, I don’t know who the successful candidates are, but I can assure you that the Edgemont Community Association pledges to work with them.
On a related matter, I had some feedback related to our October newsletter front cover. At the bottom, you may recall that one candidate had placed an advertisement. Some seemed to think that this implied that ECA “endorsed” that candidate. I want to make it clear that ECA is a non-partisan organization. We don’t endorse any candidates. The newsletter accepts paid advertising and political candidates have the same right to advertise that others have. Funds raised through advertising do not come to the association but to the magazine publisher. That said, it is the advertising revenue that contributes to making the newsletter a free publication distributed to all civic addresses in Edgemont.
November means that we are planning festive activities. On Friday, November 21, ECA will be hosting a free Community Movie Night. Join us for the new live action Lilo and Stitch! Come out and bring your kids or have one parent stay while the other can go holiday shipping while we watch Disney’s new Lilo and Stitch on our large screen. Each person will receive a free pop and popcorn! Spaces are limited so register as soon as you can. Check our website or email [email protected] for more details.
On November 29, the Edgemont Community Centre will host its Winter Market. This affords customers a good opportunity to do some holiday shopping. We have over 85 vendors lined up and that means there should be a good cross section of items to pique your interest. Entry to the market is free. We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food or monetary for the Food Bank. New this year will be a Photo with Santa. For a $5 donation, Santa will join your group so you can get your picture taken. Please bring your phone to capture the moment. Funds raised will be used by ECA to support community outreach programs like Breakfast Club and Christmas Hampers.
We are seeking Christmas Hamper donations in the form of monetary, gift cards, new gifts, and clothes. Items can be dropped off to the office until December 15. Monetary donations can be made here: https://edgemont.getcommunal.com/donate/131. We will also need volunteers to help put the hampers together and wrap gifts. Volunteers can contact Jymi at [email protected].
Finally, I can’t let November go by without a mention of Remembrance Day. Take time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our military and others to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. Purchase a poppy and wear it as a reminder of just how lucky we are to live in Canada!
