Ice, Scouts, and Slapshots: Tristan Scores Big for Hawkwood

The Hawkwood community is proud to celebrate Tristan Dunwald, a grade nine student-athlete who recently completed a three-day “Intro to Hockey” camp this January at the Hawkwood Community Park outdoor rink. This impressive initiative serves as a cornerstone of Tristan’s work toward his Chief Scout Award—the highest recognition achievable within the Scout section in Canada.

Tristan has been involved in Scouting for the past ten years, developing leadership skills, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to community service. Pursuing the Chief Scout Award represents a decade of dedication, growth, and perseverance, as well as the successful completion of a significant community-based leadership project.

For his capstone project, Tristan combined his passion for hockey with a desire to give back. As a competitive hockey player, he planned, organized, and led an introductory camp for children aged nine to eleven. The program was designed to introduce young players to the fundamentals of the game in a supportive and encouraging environment where they could learn and build confidence.

Tristan’s commitment to the local rink runs deep; in addition to organizing this camp, he has been a dedicated member of the crew that maintains the outdoor ice this winter, ensuring a high-quality surface for all residents to enjoy. For the camp itself, he independently managed every aspect, from creating detailed practice plans to leading participants through skating, puck-handling, passing, and shooting exercises. He worked closely with the young players to ensure everyone felt included and motivated, regardless of their skill level.

The feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting the encouraging atmosphere Tristan fostered and the noticeable improvement in their children’s abilities. Throughout the sessions, he emphasized teamwork, effort, and sportsmanship alongside technical development, leaving the participants with a significantly improved sense of skill in the fundamentals of hockey.

By stepping into this leadership role and mentoring younger athletes, Tristan not only shared his love for the sport but also helped create a positive and welcoming experience for youth in the community. Hawkwood congratulates Tristan on this outstanding milestone and looks forward to seeing his continued success as a leader and positive role model in our community.
