Congratulations to the community gardeners on another successful year of gardening and community building! At our wrap-up meeting the highlights included volunteer participation in garden tasks, getting to know your neighbour, and seeing all the interesting plants. For areas to work on, some gardeners mentioned accessibility issues, and some gardening tasks that lagged in completion at times. As a result, we are piloting four specific volunteer roles that community gardeners can choose from next year:

1. Water Barrels – this was very successful this year, a big thank you to all the gardeners for your participation!

2. Orchard Maintenance – already the fruit trees have received their first prune, and ongoing care will be needed.

3. Community Food Plots – specific plots will be allocated to grow food for neighbours and food banks.

4. Garden Maintenance – general maintenance like taking on weeding, pests, fencing, and any other tasks which improve the garden.

The gardening committee will work over the winter to flesh out these roles. Any and all comments from gardeners are appreciated.

We look forward to sharing more details about registering for plots later in the new year and can’t wait to get growing with you again! Finally, a huge thank you to all community gardeners for being mindful and considerate when watering during city water restrictions. It was a test of our community spirit, and we passed with flying colours!

Until early next season,

The NHCA Community Garden Committee
