2024 was a very big year for Stephanie One Spot, the lead artist for the Nose Hill tunnel mural. In April, Stephanie received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts. Then, in July, she welcomed a daughter. These big events didn’t leave a lot of time for painting, but Stephanie and her artist team were able work throughout September and October and bring the mural closer to completion.
Taking advantage of the long, linear space of the tunnel, the mural tells a story, showing scenes from Tsuut’ina creation mythology. Over the past few years, Stephanie has been able to spend time learning from Tsuut’ina Elders and creating images that will share this creation story. We are working on materials which will help guide viewers through the story as they walk through the tunnel.
Stephanie and her team of assistants, which include her sister, Maria One Spot, will be returning in late spring to complete the mural. The remaining work includes completing the animals that are currently outlined on the brightly coloured panels and adding more imagery to each panel. One section in the tunnel interior that has been damaged by water seeping in the concrete will be repaired and replaced. After the installation is complete there will be an opening event in the summer.
Stephanie and Maria would like to pass along their thanks to all the North Haven community members -and your dogs – for their support, questions, and kind comments as they worked on-site in the tunnel this fall.
