March is Community Association Awareness Month.

Throughout the month of March, the City of Calgary and the Federation of Calgary Communities encourages residents to “be part of it” and think about what your community association can do for you and what you can do for your community association.

As you know, it will be a year this March since our lives were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since that time, the SMCA Board, in compliance with Government regulations, had to cancel all regular activities like the community clean up, Music in the Park (Sandstock), and in-person meetings to name a few. We were able to arrange Yoga in the Park, which was extremely popular. This is a program we plan to offer again this spring/summer. Please continue to watch our social media sites, including our website, for more information, and let’s be optimistic that we will be able to enjoy all these activities again soon.

We are looking for more volunteers to assist with the development of a community garden. It will depend on the response we get from you as to whether this project can be moved forward. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact us at [email protected].

As I have highlighted every month, our two rinks have been extremely busy this winter, and I cannot thank the rink volunteers enough for their ongoing dedication and commitment to ensuring the rinks are cleared and flooded.

A lot of people have expressed their surprise that we rely on volunteers to maintain these rinks, as well as the equipment required. Volunteers are the backbone of any community and we have amazing volunteers who consistently come out and help us.

The SMCA Board wants to thank the many citizens who have sent emails and responded on social media to express their appreciation for these rinks, especially since the start of the pandemic. Please keep the positive comments coming and consider purchasing a community membership to help offset the costs of maintaining both rinks.

The SMCA continues to support the skate exchange program and is incredibly grateful for the donations received. If you require skates, or have skates or helmets to donate, please contact us at [email protected].

Graffiti is a form of vandalism that has a significant cost attached to cleaning it. Over the years, the SMCA has spent thousands of dollars cleaning up the areas we are responsible for. We ask that when you see graffiti, you please take a photo and forward it to the 311 website. If caught, the perpetrators will be charged.

To purchase your membership by cheque our address is 300, 8120 Beddington Blvd NW T3K 2A8 or online go to sandstonemacewan.com, or email Carolyn Gomez at [email protected]. Three-year memberships ($50.00) qualify for a SMCA to-go mug, and one-year memberships ($20.00) receive two SMCA beverage koozies.

May the luck of the Irish be with you on St. Paddy’s Day!
