Remembrance Day is November 11, and it is likely events this year will be held virtually. Hopefully, your family will be able to watch one of the many ceremonies that will take place in and around Calgary to recognize this important date. The First World War formally ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Please take the time for two minutes of silence at 11:00 am in honor of all those who fought and those who lost their lives fighting for their country.

Our SMCA Annual General Meeting is on November 12, 2020, at the Berkshire Citadel Church on Sandarac Drive at 7:00 pm. Please contact us for more information if you are interested in becoming a Board Member or a volunteer for one of the programs we operate (hockey rink maintenance, planters, music in the park, etc.). For those planning to attend, masks and hand sanitizer will be available for you before you enter the room.

Last Spring the SMCA Board informally initiated a skate exchange program and, in the little time we operated, we were able to collect about 30 pairs of skates, which were all in good condition. While we are not yet operational, if you have skates to donate or are in need of skates, please email us at [email protected].

If you know of a family in need of equipment, please let them know they can apply for assistance through Comrie’s Sports Bank www.comriessportsequipmentbank.org/.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the hockey rink. Last year we were extremely fortunate to often have two shifts (day and evening) for flooding and the rink was kept in excellent shape. This rink is available to all individuals, regardless of age, so whether you play hockey or not, please consider assisting when you can. It typically works best to clean and flood in the evening, however, a flood can happen during the day if there are individuals available.

We expect our two rinks are going to be busy this year because of families staying closer to home. The Christmas lights will be put up at both rinks and we hope to have the occasional fire going to encourage skaters to come out while maintaining a safe distance from others.
