Thank you to the 300+ families that accessed the YYC Cleanup on July 20, 2025. We would have been able to serve more, but unfortunately the one City garbage truck broke down, and we had to cut off the line early to ensure that we had them on the road at the required time. Luckily, they sent another truck that helped with the final few cars. It was the first event we had that drizzled most of the morning, luckily the last two hours were sunny, which helped everything dry up. Thank you to all the great volunteers that stepped forward to help with this event. A huge shout out to Junk King – Kyle Fagan and his team for all that they helped with offloading (metals, mattresses, and other services). I believe in the end they ended up taking another three of their dump trucks away. We were able to divert a bunch of bikes to a local charity: Youth En Route. Thank you to Boston Pizza (Seton) and Domino’s (Auburn Station) for donating pizzas for the volunteers.
We have finally been able to secure the engineers report that allowed us to close out the Development Permit for the Green Shed. I truly didn’t understand how complex of a process it was, and it is not for the faint of heart.
Painting has officially started at the Community Gardens and hopefully the mosquitoes will leave the artist alone so that she can get her work done. With all the rain they have been unbelievably bad when I have had to stop there to do anything. So far this year it appears that the amount of food theft and vandalism is down at the site, thank you to everyone enjoying the space and showing respect to the gardeners, it is greatly appreciated. As a reminder: each of the spots is tended to by local community gardeners, this space isn’t open to harvesting if you didn’t plant. If you are experiencing food insecurity, please feel free to reach out to us and we will be sure to include you when we harvest. We have posted the site map which shows the City of Calgary fruit orchard trees that we have by the white shed, the apples were harvested, the sour cherries are ready now, and the pears ended up being quite small, but hopefully tasty.
We are still compiling more information on the Shade Structure and will be sharing details at our monthly meetings and amongst the CA board.
With the upcoming City of Calgary Elections in October, I have seen a number of signs from the various candidates, but none have reached out to the CA to introduce themselves and see what community issues we face in the SE. So, when they knock on your doors to ask the hard questions, I challenge you to see who they are and how they will make our community better as our voice with the City. Please just don’t vote for the person with the most signs.
Once again, responsible pet ownership has been a topic a couple of times this past month, with a request to please share the information again. So please remember not to let your pet use someone’s well maintained front lawn as their bathroom and then leave their feces for the homeowner to dispose of. We all knew when we adopted our pet that it was our responsibility. And remember, we have an amazing dedicated off leash park, and if your dog is reactive and can’t go there, there are some amazing private facilities in the SE for your use and enjoyment.
