Spring Clean-up
Remember – for the health of our local ecosystem, don’t spring into spring clean-up too soon. Many butterflies, beneficial insects, bees, and other pollinators over-winter in dead leaves and the hollow stems of last year’s plant materials that you may want to remove. The dead plant material also promotes the growth of beneficial microbes, ultimately supporting birds and other animals further up the food chain.
Wait until temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit before you rake up leaf litter and dead plant materials as part of your spring clean-up. If you need to remove dead plant material before then, rake it into a pile in the corner of the yard and leave undisturbed for a while.
Community Clean-up
Deer Ridge will share a Community Clean-up date with Queensland on July 9. Bring your large unwanted household items and electronics to the clean-up location, where there will be City of Calgary bins set up to accept the waste. Community volunteers will be present to direct and assist. Watch for more information on the Deer Ridge Community Association website.
Community Gardens
The Deer Ridge Community Gardens will be back in full growing mode before you know it. Watch the Deer Ridge Community Association website at https://deerridgeca.com/ and the community gardens website at https://www.facebook.com/DeerRidgeCommunityGarden for the garden plot sign up date and cost for this year. Last year there was a waiting list for garden plots, so register for your plot as soon as you can. Plot preparation will begin in May.
Membership
We invite you to become a member of the Deer Ridge Community Association. You can join at any time of year, and we encourage you to become involved in making the Deer Ridge community an exciting and welcoming place to call home. Membership grants you Community Association voting privileges, so that you can have a say in the development of this vibrant community.
Memberships are only $15 annually per household. We invite all Deer Ridge residents to actively participate in the decisions shaping your community.
