Can you believe it’s already May? Almost halfway through the year? Maybe not that, but I sure can believe that pretty much everyone is ready for some warm weather fun, good times with friends, maybe a little camping already, for sure a little cleanup here and there, and some good food on the barbecue – right?

Spring Fling

A great big shout out goes out to the Queensland/Diamond Cove Community Association for organizing and hosting the April Spring Fling. Putting these events on is quite an undertaking and we are so grateful to Queensland/Diamond Cove for the opportunity to partner with them and enjoy fun activities in their community hall. Thank you to every volunteer who helped out with the work and thank you to each and every person who attended – you are the ones who ultimately make it fun.

Deer Ridge/Queensland/Diamond Cove Community Cleanup

How’s that home and yard spring cleanup going? Have you got a lot to dump? Lucky for you, and for any neighbours who may also be tidying and tossing, the Deer Ridge Community Association is partnering with Queensland/Diamond Cove Community Association on a community cleanup day. Bring your discarded household items that would normally go to the landfill to dumpsters right in the community and pay no dumping fee. Our community cleanup date is June 29 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, at the Queensland/Diamond Cove Community Centre (649 Queensland Drive SE).

What can I bring to the community clean up, you ask.

Do bring your old furniture, toilets, broken large fitness equipment, old fence and deck lumber, broken household and garden items.

Don’t bring hazardous waste, chemicals, car batteries, glass, fridges/freezers, sod/dirt.

For a full list go to: https://www.calgary.ca/communities/community-cleanup-items.html.

And if you have time to help us out with directing traffic on cleanup day, we’d love to have you volunteer with us. Email [email protected] and let us know if you would like to help.

Seasonal Yard Waste

Have you been raking up grass and leaves, possibly a lot more than you can fit in your green cart or in the paper yard waste bags, and now you’re wondering what you should do with all of this? You don’t have to keep that yard waste hanging around for another pick up day, because the City’s got you covered. Check out https://www.calgary.ca/waste/drop-off/yard-waste.html.

City of Calgary Green Cart Compost Giveaway

The City of Calgary Green Cart Compost Giveaway continues until June 1, 2024, by online appointment only. To book, go to https://www.calgary.ca/waste/residential/green-cart-compost-giveaway.html?redirect=/compost.

Should you find the compost pickup appointments are full, the webpage lists dates on which to check back to find newly released appointments and times slots available through cancellations. And the site has some helpful tips on how to use compost (remember to mix it with soil).

Preparing for a Dry Summer

Expecting a dry summer, maybe some water restrictions, and wondering what you’re going to do about maintaining your yard? Maybe you’re thinking you’d like to put down a layer of mulch in your beds or garden. The City can help you out with as much free mulch as you’d like. Go to https://www.calgary.ca/waste/residential/free-mulch.html.

Pathway and Greenspace Cleanup

Wondering who cleans up the green spaces in our community? Yep, we do. Last year we had a very sizable group of enthusiastic volunteers who brought their families and enjoyed a lovely walk on a late spring day. So, if you were able to enjoy a lovely, clean, green space last summer, thank a volunteer.

Our Deer Ridge Community Association Spring Pathway and Greenspace Cleanup is scheduled for June 9 at 9:00 am. Meet at the tent by the playscape in Yellowslide Park. Bring a friend and enjoy getting your steps in while you help beautify your neighbourhood.

Bring your sunscreen and bug spray. Water, gloves, and bags will be provided.

Please come out and join us on our Pathway and Greenspace Cleanup this year. We look forward to seeing you, and together we can keep our neighbourhood a beautiful place to live.

Community Gardens

Have you got a community garden plot this year? And are you ready to plant it? You may have noticed some work has been started on the garden beds and surroundings already, and you may be getting excited at the prospect of getting your hands in the dirt and the seeds in the ground.

We are expecting the City to deliver compost to us again this year. If you’ve committed to a garden plot, your email inbox will soon contain an invitation to come out and prep your garden bed with the compost.

If you have been on the waiting list for a garden plot, we thank you for your patience – we will give the returning gardeners a few short weeks to confirm their participation this season, and should a garden plot become available, you will be notified. Please note, community association membership is required and there is a nominal cost for the bed rental.

Considerable renewal work will be done on the garden plots throughout the spring and summer this year, as the plots are aging and in need of attention. If you would like to help with the garden bed renewals, please connect with us via email to [email protected] and let us know of your interest – we welcome volunteers!

Lacrosse at the Rink

There’s a lot of lacrosse activity going on in the now iceless rink, and it’s because the Axemen are back, practicing up for their games. And when the Axemen aren’t there, the neighbourhood junior lacrosse players are practicing. Want to know what all that practicing is for? Look the team up, see game dates and age groups, and share the excitement at http://axemenlacrosse.com/.

Answers to Last Month’s Quiz Questions

We have learned that not all newsletter readers are able to read the QR codes and get the answers to the newsletter quiz questions. The “Guess the Invention” quiz in the April newsletter was added by Great News Media. We checked, and unfortunately, at the time of writing the May newsletter, the April answers had not yet been published. However, they will be available by the time you receive this newsletter. Go to https://mycalgary.com/category/lifestyle/games-and-puzzles/.

Your membership contributes directly to the fun activities, playgrounds, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, rinks, and other amenities in your community! Volunteer Opportunities

Do you have skills that you’d like to share with your community? Would you like to get to know people, or do you enjoy the camaraderie of working together with others toward a common goal? Let us know what you do best – do you like to plan or help with events? Are you a face painter? Balloon artist, mime, or magician? Do you enjoy woodworking or garden maintenance? If there is a special skill that you think you’d like to share, whether it’s entertaining, planning, execution, maintenance, a trade, skill, or talent, we have opportunities for everyone who’d like to make a difference. Tell us what you’d like to do and maybe together, we can get creative. Get in touch at [email protected].
