Here we are in November, back into the cooler months of the year. We hope you enjoyed a safe Halloween and that you’re getting out to enjoy all that our beautiful community has to offer in this shoulder season, perhaps walking along the ridge, taking your dogs to the off-leash area, or hiking into Fish Creek Park to see what birds will be overwintering with us in our neighbourhood this year.

Community Safety

Now that we are back on standard time streets are dark much earlier, making it much harder to see pedestrians and children who may still be out walking to and from their evening activities. Please remember to watch for pedestrians and maintain a speed of no more than 40 kms/hr on community streets and 30 kms/hr in the playground zones around each of our four playgrounds.

Remembrance Day

Among the many things for which we may be grateful, is that we live in Canada and that we have peace in our land. This peace is not free. It is defended for us by those willing to pay the ultimate price to guarantee us our peace and freedoms.

On November 11 we pay tribute to our wartime fallen, and to their families who will always miss them dearly. In these turbulent times, it is also a day to show our gratitude and respect to and for those who continue to serve and keep us safe.

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held at many locations around the City, and livestreamed from the Military Museum in Calgary, and from Ottawa. In a world where we hear daily of terrible wars, loss of freedom, and of horrible suffering, we must remember to remember.

Winter Green Cart Schedule

Starting in November, your green cart will be collected every other week. This seasonal schedule helps match service to the lower volumes of yard waste during colder months. Weekly collection will return in April 2026, when spring clean-up season begins.

Visit calgary.ca/cartschedule to check your cart pickup schedule and sign up for reminders.

Make it easy to remember your cart collection schedule this winter by downloading the Calgary Garbage Day app.

Development Permits

Changes are happening all around us, not least in Deer Ridge. Would you like to be in the know about business and private developments that are planned for your community? When visiting DeerRidgeCA.com, you can easily navigate to development permits and public notices from the community website menu to see what changes are planned for Deer Ridge. At the website, click on Menu, In the Community, Development Permits.

See who your neighbours are and what the City anticipates for growth in our area in the City’s Deer Ridge profile, available at www.calgary.ca/communities/profiles/deer-ridge.

Community Memberships

Community associations represent the community’s voice on development proposals, as well as social, cultural, and environmental issues that impact your neighbourhood. Your community association is your voice of the community to the City of Calgary on important issues.

Become a community association member or renew your membership, by visiting our website at deerridgeca.com/membership/ to sign up online anytime, or use the form included in this newsletter, if you prefer not to pay online. In the event of a postal disruption, please email the community association at [email protected] to request that a board member drop by to pick it up and deliver your membership card.

Deer Ridge Community Association Memberships have been held at $15 per household, per year. Your membership fee helps support the care and maintenance of community amenities, such as rinks and playscapes. Residents with a current Deer Ridge Community Association membership have voting privileges at Annual General Meetings and Special General Membership Meetings.

Do you have suggestions for ideas and activities you would like to see in the community? Please contact us and consider volunteering in the community. Your ideas and expertise are welcome. What’s in it for you? Connection and camaraderie with likeminded residents and the joy of seeing your community vibrant and alive with fun and activities for all ages.

Ice Rinks

Are you excited to get back into winter sports? Deer Ridge Community Association maintains two skating rinks, one for pleasure and the other for shinny hockey. Rink flooding usually begins around the second week of December, weather permitting, as that’s when the sun is lower in the sky and there will be less risk of ice melt from reflection off the rink boards. Follow our outdoor rinks Instagram (@deeridgeodr) for details.

Board Meetings

Board meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month (except July, August). Please email [email protected] or call, in advance, if you would like to attend, or for any questions/comments you would like to add to the conversation. The next board meeting is scheduled for November 18. Additional dates are available on our website.

Things To Do

Looking for something to do with the family in Deer Ridge and Calgary, on weekends, professional days, and holidays, especially in the shoulder season?

Fish Creek Park is close by here, but did you know that it extends across the city into the southwest? And it looks very different there, with trails leading through forested areas, several changes in elevation and some interesting historic areas. Did you know that Fish Creek Park once contained a bison pound, used by local Indigenous Peoples for hunting purposes? Learn more at Calgaryrivervalleys.org.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, a 36-hectare wildlife reserve featuring forests, grasslands, and a lagoon, along the Bow River is free and a great place for a nature walk. Check out the many species of birds that make their home there or are seasonal visitors. The Sanctuary is open from dawn to dusk. Parking outside the Sanctuary is free.

Christmas light tours and displays will start up again in mid-November. Look online for special events and locations, the majority of which are free to walk or drive through.

Indoors sounds better? Head to the Devonian Gardens downtown, or the beautiful Central Library, both accessible by C-Train. Or check out the many craft and artisan markets that will start up in and around Calgary in early November – lists of art markets and craft sales are published at many online sites.
