Community Gardens
It was another great year at the Deer Ridge Community Gardens! The gardeners enjoyed a great harvest this year, despite the many days of rainy cool weather, and 54 lbs. of fresh vegetables were contributed to the Food Bank.
The annual Community Garden Potluck and Garden Cleanup was held in October. A big thank you to all who came out for this fun event. It was a great opportunity to visit, chat about what grew well, learn from other gardeners, work together, and enjoy a wonderful meal.
Many thanks to Bob Hall for his untiring work on the gardens all year, and to all the volunteers who have come out all summer to help mow lawns, build bed covers, water everyone’s beds, and build a sense of community about the gardens. We look forward to seeing you again in the spring, when the gardens start up again.
Are you interested in growing some fresh vegetables, herbs, or flowers for your family? Watch for an announcement in the spring, so you can join us and get a garden bed of your own.
Shady Park Update
A great big thank you to the City of Calgary for their work in upgrading the pathway at Shady Park. Now that the playground equipment is in, we’re delighted at the work to repair and upgrade the access and pathway through the park.
Recycle Bins
The City of Calgary is removing the Community Recycling Depot (CRD) located in the Deer Valley shopping area, at 1221 Canyon Meadows Dr. SE. The bins are expected to be gone in early November. The next closest Community Recycling Depots for our community are located at:
- Shawnessy: 390 Shawville Blvd SE
- Southcentre: 11011 Bonaventure Dr SE
Remembrance Day
On Monday, November 11, 2019, at 11:00 am, please take a couple of minutes to observe a moment of silence on Remembrance Day. Our freedom was bought by the soldiers and volunteers who laid down their lives, so that we could enjoy peace in our land today. Our veterans, those of previous wars, and those who serve today, have paid the price, and many continue to do so. These courageous individuals are our brothers, fathers, sisters, mothers, children, grandparents, and friends, and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude. Let us think of and remember them on this day.
Rink Rats
Our skating rinks are starting up again! Work on resurfacing them has been an ongoing project this year, and we should soon have enough cold weather to lay down and maintain a good ice surface. Volunteers are most welcome to help out at the ice rinks from the end of November to the beginning of March. If you have some spare time and would like to help out, please contact us at [email protected].
Queensland/ Deer Ridge Children’s Christmas Party
Each year, the Deer Ridge Community Association joins with Queensland to put on a Children’s Christmas Party at the beginning of December. Watch for a date announcement, coming soon, and be sure to register your youngsters to come and have fun with us again this year.
Annual Deer Ridge Family Winter Skate
The Annual Deer Ridge Family Winter Skate will be back again in January! This well-attended event is features good ice, logs on a toasty little fire in the pleasure rink, hot dogs, hot chocolate, and a good time with friends and neighbours. We welcome volunteers to assist with set-up, hot dogs, and tear-down. Watch for a date announcement – we hope you will join us and help warm up winter.
Community Association Meetings
Our November Community Association meeting will be held on November 19th, 2019, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Many, many thanks to Pastor Dressler and the congregation, who have granted us free use of the boardroom for our monthly meetings.
There will be no Community Association Meeting in December. Our first meeting in the new year will be on January 21st, at the Lutheran Church of Good Shepherd. We look forward to having you join us at a meeting, at the Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd, 13811 Deer Ridge Dr. SE.
