Here are some tips and tricks to continue your outdoor activities outside while keeping yourself and others safe.
Tip 1: Wear Reflective Gear
When walking outside or crossing the street it’s important you make yourself seen to motorists and others sharing space with you. Use reflective gear so others can see you. This could include reflective tape on the coat, a construction vest that has neon colours, or even wearing coats made of reflective fabric.
Tip 2: Use Lights on Your Bike
Just because its winter doesn’t mean you have to stop cycling! Nighttime cycling can be especially dangerous, however. Make sure you put lights around the front and back of your bike so drivers can make space for you on the road. If you’re feeling fancy, LED wheel lights can be installed to light up pathways with bright colours, all the while making you as visible to others as a Christmas tree.
Tip 3: Wear a Headlight
Whether you’re walking or going for a run — get a headlight! It’ll not only help you see; the headlight will help motorists and others see you are there, present, and moving. It also comes in handy when walking dogs, making it easier to clean up after them.
Tip 4: Light Up Your Dog
Keeping our furry friends safe is important, especially when it’s dark. Dogs and other pets are out of view when drivers approach, making it especially hard to see them. Get a glow in the dark collar. They flash different colours to let drivers know a pet is near the road using the crosswalks. Or save a few bucks and hang glow sticks on your dog’s collar. Both give your furry friend an illuminating glow!
Tip 5: Walk on Designated Crosswalks and Sidewalks
Most importantly, use crosswalks and avoid J-walking. Drivers know to keep an eye out for pedestrians in designated crosswalks but can be caught off guard by people crossing in unmarked areas. Avoid surprising drivers to give them enough time to stop.
