Hello McKenzie Towne!

Once again, the Green Line is in the news and more delays are potentially coming our way. This is critical infrastructure for our and surrounding communities. Have a look at the infographic in the newsletter this month for more information. You can also visit https://www.calgary.ca/transportation/green-line.html for further information, and you can visit https://www.lrtonthegreen.ca/ to learn about the advocacy group working to keep this project moving. They are currently doing a postcard campaign where they will send one on your behalf to the provincial government. Be sure to check it out! Personally, I’m very passionate about this project and would gladly have any discussions with community members who have concerns. Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. As an ongoing member of the CA, I want to hear what you have to say.

There is a municipal election coming up in October 2021. You may have started seeing candidates reaching out, or heard people talking about it. It’s important to be involved because municipal-level politics are what affect our day-to-day life. You can visit https://www.calgary.ca/election/information-for-voters/candidates.html for more information on who is currently registered to run for our Ward 12 position. Candidates have until one month before the election to officially register, so if someone reaches out to you and isn’t on the list, that’s ok! They may be waiting until closer to the election to register (which is completely normal).

Our current city councillor, Shane Keating, is retiring, leaving this position open to someone new. It is our job to properly research our candidates and vote on who we think will do the best job to represent our interests. Each month up to the election, I will be writing on topics such as how municipal politics work or about the issues that are most important to us in Ward 12.

Did you know they are changing the boundaries of a few of the Wards in this coming election? Ward 12 is one of them! City Council voted on the finalized map, which you can find at https://engage.calgary.ca/wardboundaries. Ward 12 will now consist of Mckenzie Towne, New Brighton, Copperfield, Auburn Bay, Mahogany, Seton, Cranston, Shepherd, and two new communities: Rangeview and Hotchkiss.

Coming up soon, we will be hosting an online auction to help with fundraising for the MTCA. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram for more information regarding this event as it becomes available. If you are able to donate items to the MTCA for the auction, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Every bit helps and all money raised from this event will go directly back into our community events and outreach programs.

For more information and to become a member, please visit our website at http://www.mckenzietowneca.com/memberships/. We really need your help! To all those that have become members for 2021, thank you and you are appreciated! We are working on more membership perks to come your way. If you can’t become a member right now, following the MTCA on social media is a huge help getting us more recognition in the community. You can find us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/MCKTCA) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/mckenzietowneca).

Our next open meeting will be Wednesday, February 10, and will be held online. The link will be mailed to all current members and will also be posted in our Facebook group. If you are interested in participating in the meeting but are not on our mailing list or on Facebook, please reach out to us and we will send you the link. We will have guest speakers in attendance such as representatives from the Calgary Police Service, Shane Keating’s Ward 12 office, the City of Calgary, and other organizations. The main focus of the MTCA is to bring our community together by being the liaison between these organizations and also by planning community events.

Please Note: We are the MTCA, not the MTC. The McKenzie Towne Council (MTC) is the board that is in control of our annual Home Owner Association (HOA) fees and they are in charge of maintaining the environment and physical amenities in McKenzie Towne.

Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] or to me directly at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Sarah Ferguson
