Queensland Diamond Cove Community Association President’s Message

Hello,

It sure is nice that we have our very cold days behind us and looking forward to thinking about gardening. April is finally here.

A big thank you to the following volunteers that helped with setting up and putting away the Family Skate event on January 31: Emilia, JJ, Julie R., Anita, and Martine. Despite the warm weather, some chose to skate for a bit on the slushy surface. Most participated in the spray bottle painting that was also available for participants. Hot chocolate and snacks were served to all who attended.

Another big thank you goes out to the following volunteers who helped with the setting up and putting away of the Family Valentine’s Dance that took place on February 14: Julie J., Linda, Sawyer, Nevelda, Martine, Jeff, Roy, Eva, Anita, Kaleb, Illia, Bennett, Jaxx, and Karen. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful music played by Stephen and Jason and prize draws, our concession was also enjoyed by all.

We now have the information available to volunteer for our biggest fundraiser for our community. May 25 and 26 is our Casino at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. We require up to 35 volunteers to make this fundraiser work. Please consider taking on a position, no experience necessary, lunch or dinner will be provided for your shift. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/904044FABAB2FA5F49-2022.

We are looking to fill the following positions at our next AGM in April 25. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm. You must have a valid membership to vote and to be considered for a board position.

·      President (two-year term) – currently Martine Myrthu

·      Second Vice President (two-year term) – currently Steve Foote

·      Secretary (two-year term) – currently Eva Reid

·      Treasurer (two-year term) – still open from last AGM

·      Memberships (two-year term) – currently Kevin Kiejko

·      Ways and Means (two-year term) – open since 2024/2025 AGM

·      Digital Media (two-year term) – currently Genevieve Myrthu

·      Two Directors at Large renewed yearly – currently Julie Jack and Ian Murphy

After our AGM we will be hosting an adult evening at the centre from 7:30 pm until midnight. There will be darts, card games (euchre, Cribb), or bring a board game that you have not played in a long time and find some new friends to play it with. We will also have music, a cash bar, pizza, and snacks available to purchase. Come and connect with other community members.

I have been highlighting why some of our community members like to volunteer; here is what two of our board of directors feel about giving back to the community.

“I like to know what is going on in the community. I like meeting new community members. It gives me a sense of belonging. It feels good to give back to the community. I enjoy spending time with board members and have made good friends.” – Eva

“I have been on the board for approximately 10 years in multiple capacities. Being a member of the board has provided me with some unique skills to enhance both my personal and professional life. Attending our board meeting allows us to learn important information and keep up to date with programs available to our community from our local city councillors, MLA, MP, and receiving crime updates from our community liaison officer. It gives me great pleasure seeing the children and their families enjoying our special seasonal events. Knowing that you are making a difference in your community is very rewarding.” – Julie J.
