Our urban ecosanctuary project is about building a place of refuge for residents to get closer to nature by getting their hands dirty, or just walking through and pausing to feel a sense of peace and “ahhh” that makes our lives feel a little better.
We are building birdhouses to attract birds, native pollinator beds to attract bees, an orchard for fruit snacks, garden boxes and flower beds for gardeners, and shade trees and benches for residents to gather, engage, and enjoy it all. Maybe even a pocket forest.
Once finished, the sanctuary will double as a demonstration site for supplying information and ideas on what you can do to turn your yard into your own sustainable space.
The committee meets about once a month through the fall to early spring, gathering ideas and making plans. If you are interested in hearing more, have a skill you are aching to practice, or just need to get out of the house to do some good and meet some of your neighbours, contact Jim at [email protected].
