HELP Team or 9-1-1? Understanding When and Who to Call
Please call the HELP Team when:
• A non-emergent concern regarding intoxicated, unhoused individuals arises.
• An unhoused individual requires a ride to a safe place to sleep.
• A vulnerable individual who is intoxicated, but not in distress, may need assistance.
• An individual or group are consuming alcohol or other substances in public spaces.
Please call 9-1-1 when:
• An individual is in medical distress, is unresponsive (not just sleeping), has blue lips, or is experiencing a suspected overdose.
• A significant physical injury has occurred and requires medical attention.
• A crime or act of violence has happened or is currently in progress.
• A weapon or threat of weapon is present.
Alpha House’s HELP Team and Calgary’s Emergency Services work together to ensure the most appropriate service response to individuals in need. Alpha House’s HELP Team is a non-emergent response to social issues and is not able to respond in situations related to violence or crime. When in doubt, call 9-1-1 and they can dispatch HELP where appropriate.
