Becoming a Better Man
Peter Berthiaume is a man who have seen and done a lot in his lifetime. Educated as an electrician, he took a left turn and spent several years as a member of the RCMP in both high-profile and day-to-day roles. Coming to Calgary in the ‘90s he restarted again as an electrician, self-employed and involved in some big building projects in our downtown core. Restless still, in his middle age, Peter decided he wanted to live a life he could take greater pride in, he wanted to become a better man.
From that time until now, Peter has grown into someone others can rely on. You won’t find his name on many formal lists of volunteers but lots of people in our community ended up with his phone number, and when we call, Peter answers. He considers himself a doer and has skills and experience that he shares with members of his community. Seeing the need, he’s the man who shows up to replace a light fixture, plan a project, offer a ride, do the physical work, give great advice, or even just a shoulder when its needed.
Like most of us, Peter has had low times in his life. Being self-aware, he was able to recognise and counter the dark times by giving more of himself to others. Lifting up others, being a man they can depend on, and showing up whenever there’s a need has boosted Peter as well. He gives us a strong example of how to build up ourselves by lifting up others and making our neighbourhood a better place. This is how an individual grows roots in the community, recognising there’s a need and showing up with the skills and experience that life has given you.
For those who want to follow Peter’s example and become better people he has some great advice. Get involved, show up, and do the work you’re able to do. The rewards are many, a greater social circle, personal growth, a sense of pride in a job well done among them. Peter is that guy who gets a wave as he drives down the street in Cedarbrae and someone always reaching for the best version of himself.
Thank-you Peter for all you’ve done and all the ways you continue to make Cedarbrae a better place!
