If you’ve attended any one of the major events hosted by our Community Centre in the last several years, you’ve seen what Joyce Wright can get done. Known for getting the ball rolling on big projects and events, Joyce has become indispensable to our Community Centre’s operations. From our biggest occasions to day-to-day volunteering, all the way to her past service as Community President, Joyce is among the most relied on volunteers Cedarbrae has.
A second generation Calgarian, Joyce took the example of those that served her and the community during her youth and expanded it. Coaches, teachers, neighbours, and volunteers, Joyce took the lessons learned and chose to not only pay it back but pay it forward too! She knew that to create the kind of community she wanted to be a part of she’d need to participate fully and lead by example.
Using her years of experience in business, Joyce has been able to bring together disparate voices and ideas to produce a cohesive team of volunteers, bringing big ideas to life. She continues to encourage more of us to volunteer our time, skills and hands, to make lighter work of all the many projects happening at our Community Centre.
Beyond the work itself Joyce sees the bigger value that can come from showing up and giving of our time. Joyce witnessed many friendships and partnerships that have grown from individuals participating in a shared cause. She is strong advocate of volunteering not only as a way to give, but as a way to discover new people and build new relationships. Looking to make new friends or find someone interesting to talk to, a common cause is an excellent place to start!
Joyce reminds us that the more people that get involved the more that can be done. She encourages potential volunteers to take the leap, find the project, program, or cause that interests them and jump in. You, like Joyce will discover the rewards, a sense of purpose, fulfilment, and the possibility of new meaningful human connections.
Thank-you Joyce for all you have done, and all you continue to do!
