CKE Community Garden

The Community Garden has spaces available for this gardening season! Read on for more information, and who to contact.

The CKE Community Garden was founded 16 years ago and has been actively tended ever since, with the exception of one season when the new community hall was under construction. Some of the original beds had to be relocated to the east end and new perennial plantings were added, but the spirit of the garden has remained unchanged.

In 2010 a group of five people (four of whom are still part of the current garden committee) spearheaded the building of this community space. The team identified several goals which included creating opportunities for community members to garden, to share gardening experience and to get to know one another, as well as to create a strong sense of community in a shared location using food and gardening as the catalyst. They also stated the importance of beautifying the space and creating opportunities for learning.

These goals continue to guide the work of the CKE Community Garden Committee. Each year improvements are made to the gardens, and ongoing repair and maintenance is undertaken. Careful consideration is given to the planning of workshops, movie nights, tours, and other activities with the intention of including not only members of the community garden, but the wider CKE community as well. Over the years these events have been extremely successful and go far in extending the reach of the garden, drawing new people into the experience of gardening and the growing of food. The sense of connection is tangible, the interactions between community members are genuine.

The invitation is open for you to experience all the positives that gardening offers – the empowerment of growing your own food, time outdoors, physical activity, stress reduction, a tangible link to the natural world and those that share the same interests. The CKE Community Garden maintains a wait list for those interested in renting a plot and you can be added to this list by sending a message to [email protected]. We will be holding a social gathering for garden members and anyone hoping to garden with us this season on March 11 at 7:00 pm at the Community Hall (please RSVP to Sonja). And keep your eyes out for upcoming events this season starting with a cooking workshop planned for early June.

Happy Gardening!
