DRCA Community Updates

Events

Community Cleanup: The DRCA is in the process of applying to the City of Calgary to once again host a Community Cleanup. This annual program allows residents to dispose of unwanted items. This event is always popular and well appreciated.

Stampede Roundup: Yeehaw! Mark your calendars for June 20, 2026 — our ever-popular Stampede Roundup is back. Join your neighbours for an afternoon packed with fun, connection, and community spirit. You won’t want to miss it!

New special events are being considered. If you have any suggestions or want to join our Special Events team message [email protected].

Music in the Park 2026 has been cancelled due to the absence of a volunteer event lead. If we’d like to bring this beloved community event back in 2027, we need a team lead (PM) confirmed by January 15, 2027. Interested in helping make it happen? Please contact Lilian at [email protected] to learn more about the role.

Fundraising

Bottle Shack: The community bottle shack continues to be an important source of funds to support ongoing activities in Discovery. The monies earned here help pay for many of the needs that Casino funds are not eligible to be used for.

Your donated, refundable bottles and cans are much appreciated.

Casino: The DRCA has been awarded casino dates for July 30 to 31, 2026. Held every 18 months, these casinos are our largest fundraiser, typically generating over $75,000. Funds earned support the build, repairs, and improvements to the DRCA Recreation Facility—without them, the amenities we enjoy wouldn’t be possible. Please consider volunteering for this important fundraiser. Email [email protected] to sign up.

Recreation Facilities

Dedicated Discovery Ridge volunteers maintain the community’s tennis, pickleball, roller hockey, skating, and hockey facilities year-round.

Ice Update: It’s been a challenging season for our amazing ice crew, with warm weather and water restrictions making things tricky — but thanks to their hard work, the community still enjoyed some great skating! Huge thanks to our dedicated volunteers who spent countless evenings maintaining the ice and making the most of the season.

Rink Update: Continued maintenance is planned for the boards and netting. Pickleball and roller hockey equipment will be installed when the season changes.

Leisure Ice: Lighting options are being explored to support evening use, with directional lighting from the maintenance facility currently under consideration.

Tennis Courts: Improvements are being made to the tennis courts to ensure Discovery Ridge residents continue to enjoy them. Watch for updates in April’s edition of the RR and in other means of DRCA communications.

Solar Panels for the Recreation Facility: The DRCA recently applied for a grant to cover the cost of installing solar panels on the roof of the recreation maintenance building. While we didn’t receive funding on this application the DRCA will continue to seek funding support.

Planning

Clearwater Park and Pathways: With the planned demolition of the old Highway 8 bridge and no pathway included on the new structure, the DRCA continues to advocate for pathway access with relevant stakeholders.

Elbow Valley Wetlands: Following the removal of the wetlands during ring road construction, the area has been left in an undesirable state. The DRCA has met with the Taza developer, along with City of Calgary representatives, to discuss potential restoration efforts and to explore potential improvements of the conservation area.

Pathway Connections to Taza: Future trail connections between 69 Street SW and the Taza communities are being contemplated in development plans. While timelines and specifics are not yet confirmed, these links would enhance walking and cycling access heading east.
