Homeowners’ Association (NDHA) News

Welcome to March everyone! Spring may be right around the corner, but we all need to be ready for one last bout of winter. Or maybe several. NDHA’s focus remains on keeping pathways snow and ice free. Warmer days followed by cold evenings can mean melting on the pathway during the day will freeze up at night. Please be careful when you are out enjoying our neighbourhood pathways. If you see an area that needs attention, reach out to us by email at [email protected] or call us at 403-237-9595.

Discovery Ridge Dam Safety Project

In late January, the City followed up on its promise made in November to hold a meeting where the technical aspects of this initiative would be explained. There was a very good crowd at this Technical Information Session, held at Ambrose University. The day of the meeting, the City provided copies of the two engineering studies that are underpinning its assessment of the dam and the options for ensuring safety. City representatives heard directly from residents what a valuable community asset the pond is and suggestions for mitigation options that were not considered in the studies. Unfortunately, City staff at the meeting confirmed that the decision to remove the dam has been finalized. The next step is to create a conceptual design for the area after dam removal. City staff at the meeting committed to more outreach on this phase of the work.

The NDHA’s Directors, as Discovery Ridge residents, are disappointed that the City has decided to remove the dam. Going forward, the NDHA’s primary concern will be how the new landscape design will integrate with the existing neighbourhood green spaces. We will continue to work with the City on this project to make sure the area remains an attractive natural feature that reflects Discovery Ridge’s other beautifully landscaped green spaces.

Black Knot Tree Fungus – Please Prune It Out!

If you look at your trees right now and you see a dark, lumpy mass clinging to any of the branches, you probably have a tree infested with Black Knot Fungus. Black Knot is endemic to Calgary and spreads via spores from within the lumpy mass. This fungus affects Mayday, Chokecherry (including the red Schubert Chokecherry trees prevalent in our community), and other stone fruit trees. For the survival of your infected tree, it is recommended to prune it out while the tree is dormant (no leaves) and the mass is easy to see. Specific procedures must be followed when pruning to reduce further contamination.

The City of Calgary prunes Black Knot Fungus from trees on public property within our community; please help to control this scourge and potentially save your own trees by doing the same. Consider hiring a professional certified arborist if you do not feel comfortable pruning or handling Black Knot material. More information on Black Knot can be found on the City or Province’s websites under “Black Knot Fungus”.
