Winter Is Coming … But Will There Be Any Ice?

With apologies for talking about winter so early, we are planning for the upcoming season and operation of our ice rinks in the community. While we have had a dedicated group of volunteers for many years, last year we were a bit thin as many volunteers take a step back. Some of our volunteers no longer have kids using the rinks as in the past as is the natural progression of things. So, we need to bring in the next generation of volunteers to work with the experienced rink crews and then take the lead going forward.

Do your kids or your family enjoy using our hockey and leisure rinks? Do you have an interest in community volunteering or have some time to spare in winter? If so, please consider volunteering on our rink crew. It takes a tremendous amount of work to prepare the ice initially and then maintain it through the season. Fortunately, though, with enough volunteers we are able to share the effort and have a rotational schedule that has worked well in years past so that the individual time commitment is limited.

Without enough volunteers, we do run the risk of not having ice or not being able to open the rink after heavy snowfalls or mid-season warm spells that melt the ice. All of the Discovery Ridge Community Association’s recreation facilities are entirely managed by volunteers and community residents. We are fortunate to have first class facilities but without enough people stepping up to volunteer, these amenities may not always be available.

Please consider whether you are willing and able to help and watch for further communication as the winter season approaches. In the meantime, if you are interested in signing up to help, please send a note to [email protected].

Thank you.
