Safety and Security in Discovery Ridge and Griffith Woods

Lately, we have had questions regarding safety and security within our community, especially with the onset of warm weather and more visitors to Griffith Woods. The DRCA has always worked closely with the Calgary Police Service and our appointed Community Resource Officer (CRO) on these matters, especially since our beloved Griffith Woods has become more popular with visitors.

This season, we are very happy with the additional reinforcements planned by both the Calgary Police Service and the Calgary Fire Department to help ensure our community remains safe (e.g., reducing risk of fires) and secure (e.g., patrolled and monitored to reduce risk of crime). Some activities that could occur:

  • Marked Calgary Police Service cars patrolling the parking lot and neighbourhood
  • Walking Fire Department patrols within Griffith Woods on days when campfires are more likely
  • Additional safety and security risk-awareness messaging from fire and police department as they patrol/encounter groups of visitors
  • Check stops to deter and prevent impaired drivers, especially those leaving gatherings in Griffith Woods

The DRCA will continue to work with our CRO and to liaise with other community associations to ensure we are sharing best practices on how to work with police to mitigate crime and keep our neighbourhoods safe. We continue to ask all residents to report crime or suspect activities to the Calgary Police Service. It is not enough to post suspect activity on Facebook. It is not advisable to approach those participating in suspicious or unlawful activity on your own. Always call the police. The more they know, the more they can help.

We also ask that if you are a parent, you talk to and educate your family members, their friends, and any visitors planning a trip to Griffith Woods. A little information can go a long way. Fires are illegal in Griffith Woods and the park closes at 11:00 pm.

We ask all Discovery Residents to do their part and report what they see:

Call 911 for:

– Drinking and driving

– Open fires

– Illegal or suspicious activity underway

– Public intoxication or disturbing the peace

– Graffiti in progress

– Vandalism in progress

Call Police Non-Emergency at 403-266-1234 for:

– Unusual situations such as vehicles parked and “exchanging” items in the dark through car windows

– It is imperative that all non-911 matters are called in to this number so there is a record and statistics can be built. An example could be cars parked in the parking lot at 10:00 pm (technically the park is still open), music on, wandering in and out of the park. In situations like this, although non-emergency, there are clearly suspicious activities occurring.

Call 311 or report online (which includes City of Calgary Bylaw) for:

– Dogs off leash

– Vehicles parked in the Griffith Woods parking lot after hours

– Graffiti

– Vandalism to Griffith Woods

Calgary Police Service – Drug Tip Line at 403-206-8100 if:

– You know of, or suspect, any drug dealing
