Rink Volunteers Needed!
With winter quickly approaching we are looking for dedicated volunteers to join our rink crews. Do you or your family enjoy using our outdoor rinks? If so, please consider helping us make and maintain our ice.
Once the weather is consistently below freezing, we will start the initial rink flooding which is generally an all-hands-on-deck approach taking a few weeks. Once the rinks are established, we then operate four separate rink crews, each working one week on and then three weeks off in rotation. The commitment varies but this schedule has worked well in past years.
But…it only works if we have enough people to operate the four crews. Each crew has a team lead that coordinates with that team and with other teams. We generally have an overall lead as well that coordinates as between the team leads. We typically have at least six volunteers per team, and more is always better.
With thanks to the many past volunteers who have worked many hours on the rinks, it is important to bring in fresh volunteers as others cycle out over time. This way we can have our experienced volunteers train up the new recruits and pass along years of ice-making knowledge.
This includes operating the equipment that the DRCA has purchased for rink maintenance.
The outdoor rinks in Discovery Ridge are amongst our best used and most appreciated amenities but only operate if we have enough volunteers. Please consider helping this year!

Finding Freedom in Discovery Ridge!
Have you been in the Griffith Store lately? There are several changes going on, from the range of products they sell, to the design of the store. Not only can you enjoy Foothills Creamery hard scoop ice cream and Stock & Sauce soups, but Coco Brooks pizzas and Pie Junkie sweet and savoury pies are coming soon. Shortly, the store will be opening at 7:00 am weekdays with Fratello Coffee, fresh baking, and healthy overnight oats for breakfast!
Another change, Max and his wife Somiya are now running our local grocery store and are truly lovely people. They have overcome incredible challenges to come here as refugees from Pakistan. They count themselves blessed to have received the support of a sponsoring organization here in Calgary that got them started and later connected them with the opportunity of running the G-Store. Max and Somiya live happily in the Wedgewood Condos with their two daughters… so please come by the Griffith Store to support them and say hello!
Winter Green Cart Schedule
Starting in November, your green cart will be collected every other week. This seasonal schedule helps match service to the lower volumes of yard waste during colder months.
Weekly collection will return in April 2026, when spring cleanup season begins.
Visit calgary.ca/cartschedule to check your cart pickup schedule and sign up for reminders. And make it easy to remember your cart collection schedule this winter by downloading the Calgary Garbage Day app.
Activities for Children and Youth During the Strike
In response to the province-wide teachers’ strike, The City has launched activities for children during the strike (https://www.calgary.ca/parks-rec-programs/activities-during-teachers-strike.html), sharing ways the city and its partner organizations are stepping up programming for children and youth. To help caregivers navigate the many options for care, this site organizes day camps, workshops, and activities so parents can find the right fit at a glance.
