We are in full summer, and our community is displaying its full glory. This year we seem to be avoiding the challenges of the last few – so far, no drought, water use restrictions, or excessive hot spells. Thanks to ULS and Pixie Gardens, our medians, walkways, and community green spaces are looking great. We have even managed to operate our signature waterfall feature at our community entrance! During these great summer days, crews are a common sight on our roads maintaining and watering our medians and greenery. Please slow down when passing them so everyone can stay safe. Giving them a wave as you pass as well to show your support.
Landscaping
NDHA’s major median renewal program was completed in last month and it was a great success. Median vegetation has to be managed so it continues to look good but stays within the median and one plant does not cover over the others. Overgrown medians are also a safety issue, blocking drivers’ view of people or animals who may be crossing the street. We were aiming to re-create the balance of various the various plants that the original xeriscape installation had and make better sight lines along our main streets. The results look really great, and we hope this work will provide beautiful and safter streets for years to come.
As a reminder, in summer you may see portions of our green spaces that do not seem to be getting the attention you might expect. Sometimes, excessive rain makes the ground too soft for the heavy mowers to work on safely and without creating damage. On the other hand, if extremely dry conditions exist, the turf can become yellow and the soil powdery dry. In either of these conditions, ULS will skip scheduled mowing and trimming, only doing work in those areas on an as-necessary basis. You will probably also notice mowing crews out less frequently in late summer as the grass slows down growth in August. If you do see an area that you think needs extra care or have any questions about the landscaping work you see going on in the community, please reach out by phone, email, or through our website.
Outstanding Fees
The 2025 NDHA fee of $325 was due on June 29. We would like to thank our members who have paid their fee on time, and ask that those who have not, please remit immediately. If you are unsure of your payment status, please access your membership portal on our website. If you have questions or concerns, you may contact the NDHA Treasurer at [email protected] or our Membership Director at [email protected]. Please reference your property address.
Involvement
Regular readers of our Ridge Review updates will recall that we have been working hard to recruit new volunteers to help NDHA deliver one of the most beautifully landscaped communities in Calgary. To accomplish this, the Association needs a sustainable and well-informed Board, meaning a diversity of new Directors and long-term Directors. In June, we had two long-term Directors retire and we had four new residents step forward to become Directors for NDHA. Our new Directors will bring fresh energy and ideas to the work we do. Despite this recent influx of new talent, NDHA is still interested in hearing from residents who care about keeping Discovery Ridge beautiful and have some time to contribute. A proverb says, “Many hands make light work” and NDHA has room for any hands who want to help out. Reach out to us to discuss the role you could play.
The NDHA Board is quite proud of its work to ensure Discovery Ridge is one of the most beautifully landscaped communities in Calgary. We hope you like the results as well! If you happen to notice an area that might need attention such as a bed being missed or damage to landscape or amenities, please let the NDHA know. We are always happy to hear from our members; please access our website at www.ndha.ca, send an email at [email protected], or call us at 403-237-9595.
Have a wonderful August!
