Homeowners’ Association (NDHA) News
Do you think spring might actually be here? There are signs but our Calgary weather can surprise us with more snow and ice for a while yet. While we are waiting for the first green shoots to peek up above the ground, the NDHA is working with our various landscape contractors preparing for a busy growing season. The first priority will be the big spring cleanup of our greenspaces, medians, and boulevards. We are looking forward to good weather to get this work started.
Transportation and Utility Corridor
Since the construction of Stoney Trail, the NDHA has been unable to manage most of the median at the entry to our neighbourhood. You may have noticed that some of the grass is rough and not trimmed that often. This portion falls withing the Transportation and Utility Corridor that borders Stoney Trail and is managed by Alberta Transportation. The NDHA has been in discussions with the Province about this for several years and they finally agreed to a maintenance agreement for the NDHA to care for this area. This means that we will take over managing the turf in the median this spring. With ULS’ expert lawn care, our community entrance should start looking more cared-for in the coming months. This is a big win for the NDHA, and it will improve first impressions when residents and guests drive into the community.
Pathway Cleanup
The NDHA cleans neighbourhood pathways down to bare pavement all winter long for pedestrian safety. An unavoidable consequence of this cleaning is that bristles from snow cleaning equipment are shed and litter the pathway area. We require ULS, our snow clearing contractor, to clean up visible bristles on a regular basis throughout the winter. As the snow melts, there will be more of these lost bristles uncovered. We are also aware that some fuel leaks on certain paved pathways have caused stains. Please know that we are “on it”, and that ULS will do a thorough tidying up of bristles and fuel stains during their spring cleanup measures.
Street Sweeping
The City of Calgary typically launches street sweeping in mid-April. At the time of writing, the community schedule was not yet available. This schedule is weather-dependent. You can access the City of Calgary website for schedule updates or to sign up for their “Street Sweeping Alert” to get notified via email or text. Please note the following:
· During the program, daytime crews will sweep in neighbourhoods Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
· Major roads are swept overnight to reduce traffic impact.
· Watch for signs in the community indicating when your street is scheduled for clean-up.
· Parking bans are in place when signs are present. Vehicles are subject to be ticketed and towed. Please move all vehicles and cart bins from the road on the posted dates and times.
The NDHA will work with ULS to ensure they have completed all median and boulevard cleanup prior to the City of Calgary carrying out street sweeping operations in our neighbourhood.
Yard Cleanup and Garbage Bins
Once the snow is gone and we truly break into spring, many of our residents begin the hard work of cleaning up their own yards in preparation for the growing season. It is always surprising how much garbage and other debris can be collected after a long winter! The NDHA would like to ask that residents use their own green/blue/black bins to dispose of waste from your household and property. We have had instances in the past where community park garbage bins were used for the disposal of large cardboard, Styrofoam, plastics, etc. This is considered “illegal dumping” and offenders can be fined. Please use community garbage bins as intended so that everyone can benefit from the convenience. If you find a full or overflowing bin, call 3-1-1 to have it emptied.
We are always happy to hear questions and concerns from our NDHA members. You can contact via our website at www.ndha.ca, send us an email at [email protected], or even call us at 403-237-9595. As always, if you are interested in helping the NDHA maintain one of the most beautifully landscaped communities in Calgary, reach out through the website or email us at [email protected].
