Happy New Year, Glenbrook!

2020 looks to be another year of change and challenges for Glenbrook residents. I hope the year is good to everyone, even as we face some uncertainty with our economy. Remember, a quick gesture to help out a neighbour goes a long way.

I’d like to remind you that the Glenbrook Hall is available to rent for anyone, in the community and beyond. When renting out the hall, we recommend that all renters have general liability insurance and liquor server insurance prior to their event, if alcohol is to be served. A new policy for 2020, any renter with a current Glenbrook Community Membership will now be covered under the Glenbrook Community Association General Liability policy. We still recommend purchasing liquor server insurance if alcohol is being served, but now, members will not need to take out the additional insurance. As a reminder, here are our current rates:

Our Annual Family Skating Party is coming up in February, and will be held on the Saturday, the first of the month. The KidSport Skate Shack will be available to provide us with free skate rentals. It is a free day of activities and food for our residents to enjoy, at the skating rinks at the community hall, and a time to reconnect with your neighbours. Throughout the winter, our rinks are open to the public to use at no cost; however, we ask that you purchase a community membership, which helps us offset the cost of running and lighting the rinks. I hope to see many familiar and new faces at the skating party this year.

The need for rink volunteers comes up every year about this time. At the moment, we are down to only a couple of volunteers trying to maintain our outdoor rinks. As they both work full-time jobs, this can be overwhelming for only a couple of people. If we want to continue operating the skating rinks in Glenbrook, we need more volunteers to step up before next year. If you can spare a few evenings a month, and want to help the rinks continue in Glenbrook, call or text me at 403-616-4644, or send an email to [email protected]. We will contact you and set up a few evenings this season to get you familiar with what goes into maintaining the rinks.

Lastly, as always, a reminder to please watch your speed, as playground and school zones have been combined into one speed zone for some time now. I have noticed many of our residents who still do not pay attention to these speed restrictions, which are now in effect until 9:30 pm each night, long after the sun has set in the winter. Let’s do all we can to keep our residents safe this season.

All the best in 2020,

Murray Ost, President
