Oh,
sweet April – a month where it is almost impossible to keep your car clean and
the Easter Bunny could quite easily lay his eggs inside or out due to the wild
unpredictability of Mother Nature.
You
just never know with April. According to Canada Weather Stats, on April 29,
1926, Calgary temperatures swelled to 29.4 °C while the coldest record was set
on April 2, 1954, at -30.0 °C.
April,
to me, is slightly insufferable. Just when I start to question if this
landscape is actually devoid of colour, my husband, born and raised in Calgary,
will optimistically remind me that we live in the “Blue Sky City”. I stand
corrected: mostly monochromatic with a touch of blue. By April, my west coast
DNA is craving that chartreuse colour of Spring. The one that is not quite
green but not quite yellow.
And
to scratch this itch, I started researching ‘how to make a bulb lasagna, only
to learn that Spring bulbs in outdoor pots are not advisable in an April Zone 3
climate; moreover, it is highly advisable to wait until the May long weekend to
plant anything. Duly noted. So, instead I threw a bit more salt on that
stubborn slippery section of our sidewalk.
You
might ask, “C’mon, April isn’t too bad?” And in all fairness, you would be
right. It is not.
Here
is what I am learning…how to appreciate those simple things that distinguish
the subtle shift in season here: hockey skates replaced by soccer cleats,
restaurant patios buzzing before they rightfully should be, and a big snowfall
that melts too quickly, leaving us a little sad to miss that one last sled.
April
teaches patience in an immediate and fast world. If only we could Amazon Prime
nice weather to our doorstep! April reminds us that Spring will take the time
it needs to move us into technicolour. There is no place like home.
Happy
April, everyone.
