Greetings, neighbours!
We made it through January, hooray! While winter is not over, the days are starting to get a little longer and we are on the back-nine of the winter course.
February is a bit of a funny month, isn’t it? It has a funny spelling which few people bother to pronounce phonetically (which is probably for the best, I mean, try saying “feb-roo-arry” to the next person you see, and they might give you a funny look). It has a funny number of days (only 28 this year). It starts off funny with a rodent telling us whether we get six more weeks of winter or not. However, I admit I love the film Groundhog Day (also funny).
This month has a holiday called “Family Day” which is a bit funny because that is most days for me. It could just be called “Sunday Again”. And then there is Valentine’s Day, which is not a ‘holiday’ per se, but Hallmark tells us it’s important. The imagery of a flying cupid can be funny, but disappointing an expectant admirer is not-at-all funny, so don’t forget the flowers.
Superbowl is funny because it is a time for friends to get together and watch funny commercials and in between all that, there is a little bit of sports. My friends call it Ultra dish because it’s really about the food. Another lesser-known sporting championship occurs in February which many people around the world think is a little funny. Curling! The Canadian women’s curling championships, known as the Scotties Tournament of Hearts or simply, ‘the Scotties’, takes place February 14 to 23 this year. Curling is great! If you’ve always wanted to try but never knew how, send me an email.
It’s settled, February is a funny month, and I’m glad for it.
I’ll wrap up this month’s note by sharing a big “thank-you” to our helpful and committed contractors at Glendale Hall, Jim and James. Over the past few months, they have responded to several building emergencies to keep us up, running, and with a hall filled with a variety of renters and events that have been great. Thanks for all you do.
Keep an eye out for upcoming events at our hall and our neighbouring community associations via the Thumper and eNews. If you have any ideas for community events, email [email protected].
