Glendale’s President’s Message for July

Glendale cn

Happy sunny days, Glendale!

We at the GGMCA Board hope your summer season is off to a fantastic start. That ‘Stampede Feeling’ is in the air and the city is vibrant and full of life. With all the fun and excitement, remember the words of Baz Luhrman, “wear sunscreen.” And I would add, “stay hydrated”.

While our regular board meetings are paused for July and August, our board is still engaged through the summer to deliver on some important things for the community. For example, our Stampede Breakfast (held on July 5) is one of our largest and most well attended events and we thank all our volunteers so very much for their help in putting it on. Our casino fundraiser happens to fall on July 20 to 21 this year and we have an excellent slate of volunteers to help with that. While our community space offers many sporting elements and will continue to provide space for things like tennis, pickleball, basketball, and street hockey, we are also embracing art this summer with some mural installations around the exterior of the hall. We hope you enjoy the themes and addition of colour.

Here’s the part where I make a shameless plug for board volunteers. Each year at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) our community members elect a slate of board members. We have an amazing core group of volunteers but are looking to fill a few more vacancies for next year. If you’re even remotely curious about what being at the table entails, please shoot me an email and I can explain further ([email protected]). There are some exciting events and projects we are taking on and many hands make light work. We also appreciate having a diverse perspective and know that everyone brings a certain set of skills that can add value to our community (no, I’m not talking about the Liam Neeson in ‘Taken’ set of skills). Our AGM is September 10, and our board meets on the second Wednesday of the month.

Lastly, I’d like to thank Laura Nixon for serving both as Thumper Editor and board Secretary over the past year. Most people can’t wear two hats at the same time, but Laura made it look ‘oh so fashionable’. Sincerely, thank you!

Take care Glendaliens!

Myles
