What Can You Do for Your Community?
Over the last little while, I have been so thrilled to see members of the community stepping up to take initiative regarding something they are passionate about. The other day, a community member came in to ask if she could help steward the little free children’s library (LFL) in front of the hall. As a volunteer of “The Book Bank” at Shedpoint, she helps to collect/sort/deliver books to various non-profit organizations and LFLs. As a resident of Haysboro, she wanted to help fill up our own little free children’s library as well. Thank you, Alena! We are so glad you came in and made this connection!
Another resident came in to see if she could help set up a program for outdoor arts for kids and teenagers; generously offering her time to help find a grant to fund this for the hall and setting up a workshop to create a “safe space” for our teenagers to be creative, just hang out, and maybe feel like they belong somewhere. The office is thrilled to work with her to help make this happen.
There are so many things you can do to help make Haysboro better. A group of wonderful volunteers and the 118th St. Andrew’s Scout Group shows up every year to organize the Haysboro Easter Egg Hunt and crafts. Another member is helping to guide us with her gardening expertise for our Garden Committee and Bumblebee Lane Plant Exchange.
Every action counts – whether it is taking some time to pick up garbage at the playgrounds, donating to the HCA to support our programs and events, or volunteering your time at an event or with a community group. It all matters!
COVID forced us to shut down all our programs and events and we lost many of our groups and volunteers. Now, there is a growing demand for community gathering and engagement. It takes a village, so please, if there is an initiative or event you feel passionate about, reach out to the HCA office first as we may already have plans in the works. If we don’t and you have the drive, assemble a group, do it yourself, or take the lead! Thank you so much to all the current amazing volunteers who are continually doing so much to help make our community a better place. You are so appreciated.
The AGM is on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Do you want to connect to the community? Do you want more programs/events/initiatives and want to help bring them to life? The Haysboro Community Board could be a good fit for you. We are looking for board members in various areas – help with grant writing, a champion of subject-matter, a group we can call upon to volunteer, basically anyone with a community-minded spirit and desire to help. We are looking to build up our base of community enthusiasts and volunteers to engage residents. All neighbours are welcome to attend the AGM and must have a valid HCA membership for one month prior to the meeting in order to vote on motions.
As always, reach out to the admin team anytime at [email protected]. Let us know if there is a community initiative you are passionate about and would like to head up!
