Back for a seventh year, Calgary will compete and collaborate with over 500 cities from around the world to document urban biodiversity.

How It Works

From April 25 to 28, residents will document wild plants and animals by taking photos or making audio recordings. Then upload them to iNaturalist.ca or download the iNaturalist app. From April 29 to May 4, upload all your observations to iNaturalist and help to identify posts made by others. On May 5, local, national, and global results are announced.

Why Participate?

There is nature all around us! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are helps us study and protect them, but the only way to do that is by all of us – scientists, land managers, and the community – working together to find and document the nature in our area.

By participating in the City Nature Challenge, not only do you learn more about your local nature, but you can also make your city a better place – for you and other species!

Who Can Participate?

Anyone from the Calgary Metropolitan Region: Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks, High River, Foothills County, and Rocky View County.

Cities Are Ranked On:

• The number of observations made

• The number of species documented

• The number of people who participate

The 2024 City Nature Challenge (CNC) Global and National Rank:

• Observations: 13,451 (42nd out of 690 Cities Global/ third out of 40 Canadian Cities)

• Species: 788 (167th out of 690 Cities Global/ eighth out of 40 Canadian Cities)

• Observers: 280 (67th out of 690 Cities Global/ sixth out of 40 Canadian Cities)
