Message from the Director of Traffic and Safe Streets
April signals a clear seasonal transition in Killarney-Glengarry. Longer daylight hours, milder temperatures, and improving pathways draw more residents outdoors. With increased activity comes greater interaction between drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, families, and pets. Spring rain, ongoing construction, and leftover winter surface wear create unpredictable conditions. A measured pace, attentive travel habits, and shared responsibility among all road users will help ensure our neighbourhood remains safe, accessible, and welcoming as activity levels rise.
For Drivers
· Reduce speed on wet roads, stopping distance increases in rain.
· Watch for potholes, uneven surfaces, and temporary lane changes from early construction.
· Be cautious near playgrounds, schools, parks, and transit stops.
· Yield at marked and unmarked crosswalks and stop signs.
· Give cyclists at least one metre of passing space and expect them to ride further from curbs to avoid debris.
· Use headlights during heavy rain or low visibility.
· Stay fully attentive; traffic volumes and conditions can change quickly.
· Be mindful of splash near sidewalks and crossings.
· Ensure brakes, signals, and wipers are functioning for wet-weather travel.
For Cyclists
· Perform a spring safety check: brakes, tire pressure, chains, and reflectors.
· Brake earlier on wet surfaces; take caution over painted lines, metal grates, and railway tracks.
· Use lights during overcast days or evening rides.
· Signal clearly and position yourself visibly at intersections.
· Watch for opening vehicle doors.
· Choose routes with established cycling infrastructure when possible.
For Pedestrians, Students, Families, and Pets
· Use crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
· Wear bright or reflective clothing during early morning or evening hours.
· Supervise children near streets, driveways, and alleys.
· Avoid using devices while crossing streets.
· Be cautious on slick sidewalks and near construction.
· Keep pets leashed and visible.
· Remind children to pause, look, and cross safely.
For Residents and Community Members
· Clear sand, gravel, and debris from sidewalks bordering your property.
· Inspect landscaping and fences near sidewalks and alleys for clear sightlines.
· Report potholes, damaged signage, or visibility concerns promptly.
· Park considerately to preserve sightlines at intersections.
· Check exterior lighting to support evening visibility.
· Assist neighbours who may need help with spring maintenance.
Community and Enforcement Updates
· CPS and Bylaw Services continue enforcement on speed, school-zone safety, and intersection visibility.
· City crews address road repairs and infrastructure inspections.
· Pedestrian and cycling activity are expected to rise in April as parks and pathways see more use.
Stronger Together: Supporting Community Safety
· Model attentive and respectful road use for children and youth.
· Share reminders about safe travel within your networks.
· Participate in community discussions on traffic and mobility improvements.
· Support initiatives promoting accessible streets.
· Encourage patience and cooperation among all roadway users.
For traffic or safety concerns, residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 or submit a request online. Reporting helps the City identify trends and prioritize improvements effectively.
As activity increases this spring, slowing down, staying visible, clearing walkways, and looking out for one another strengthens safety across the community. KGCA remains committed to raising awareness and supporting neighbourhood-led efforts for safe mobility.
Wishing everyone a safe and steady April.
