Message from the Director of Traffic and Safe Streets
March marks a seasonal shift in our community, bringing milder temperatures alongside unpredictable road and pathway conditions. Melting snow, lingering ice, and surface wear from winter create new hazards that call for extra attentiveness from everyone using our streets and sidewalks. As more residents choose to walk, cycle, and spend time outdoors, patience and shared awareness become especially important. Adjusting to these changing conditions helps ensure Killarney-Glengarry remains safe, connected, and welcoming for all as spring approaches.
For Drivers
• Prepare vehicles for mixed conditions: check tire tread, wipers, and washer fluid.
• Watch for potholes and road damage from freeze–thaw cycles.
• Anticipate icy patches in mornings and shaded areas, especially residential streets and bridges.
• Reduce speed near crosswalks, playgrounds, transit stops, and school zones.
• Clear mud, slush, and debris from lights and license plates.
• Give extra space to cyclists and pedestrians on wet or uneven surfaces.
• Avoid distractions; road conditions can change quickly.
• Be mindful of splash from puddles near pedestrians.
For Cyclists
• Use lights and reflective gear; visibility may still be reduced.
• Ride cautiously on wet pavement, sand, and debris.
• Brake earlier; traction varies between surfaces.
• Choose well-maintained routes and inspect tires and brakes.
• Signal clearly and stay visible at intersections.
For Pedestrians, Students, Families, and Pets
• Walk carefully on icy sidewalks, particularly in shaded areas.
• Wear bright or reflective clothing during early morning and evening.
• Avoid puddles hiding ice or uneven surfaces.
• Keep devices away when crossing; sightlines may be blocked by snowbanks or parked cars.
• Review safe crossing habits with children.
• Keep pets leashed and visible; wipe paws to remove salt and grit.
For Residents and Community Members
• Clear ice and debris from sidewalks.
• Check drainage to reduce pooling and refreezing.
• Ensure exterior lighting is functional.
• Park considerately to maintain sightlines at intersections.
• Check on neighbours who may need help with seasonal maintenance.
Community and Enforcement Updates
• CPS and Bylaw Services focus on school-zone safety, speed compliance, and intersection visibility.
• Pedestrian activity increases near schools, parks, and transit stops.
• City crews continue pothole and road repairs; expect occasional delays.
Stronger Together: Supporting Community Safety
• Help neighbours clear walkways or navigate slippery areas.
• Walk with children, seniors, or community members who feel unsafe.
• Share safe route information and seasonal hazard updates.
• Encourage participation in KGCA initiatives and community safety programs.
• Foster awareness as residents return outdoors.
For any traffic or safety issues in the Killarney-Glengarry community, residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 or submit a request online. Increased submissions per resident and household help the city recognize and prioritize community concerns more effectively.
As we transition to spring, small actions — slowing down, staying visible, clearing walkways, and looking out for one another — maintain safe streets for all. KGCA will continue promoting seasonal safety and supporting community-led initiatives for safer mobility.
Wishing our community a March focused on awareness, patience, and safe travel.
