Warm Summer days – perfect for being a localist!
by Carolyn Johnson, KGCA Prsident
“Mom, can we ride our bike today?”
I had a few errands to run, school drop offs to coordinate and evening commitments, but sure!
Off the back of that request from my son, we picked up eggs at Francesco’s (local farm sourced), fresh bread—and a cookie!—at Glamorgan bakery (locally baked), lasagne from Alpine Meats for dinner (100mile product), biked to our local school, and met with our Neighbourhood Partnership coordinator at Richmond Green (local office).
From there we biked to local community soccer in the evening, attended a local KGCA meeting at the hall and watered my community garden plot while I was there.
Did you know that Harvard Business Review suggests that local job growth is linked to the amount of small, local employers in a community? Let’s support our local businesses and services!
I challenge you to write down a list of activities and purchases. Can even 10% more of them come from local or small businesses?
Take advantage of the slower pace this month to explore what is around the community and be a localist!
