Killarney-Glengarry’s Traffic and Safe Streets – December Reminders

Message from the Director of Traffic and Safe Streets

December is a month of celebration, reflection, and preparation for winter. As we enjoy festive gatherings and seasonal activities, our streets and sidewalks require extra attention. Shorter days, colder temperatures, and holiday traffic mean that every resident plays a role in keeping our neighbourhood safe, courteous, and accessible.

For Drivers

• Prepare your vehicle for winter: winter tires, antifreeze, functioning wipers, and defrosters.

• Drive cautiously on icy, snowy, or slushy roads, and increase stopping distances.

• Watch for pedestrians near malls, community centres, and holiday events—expect sudden stops or crossings.

• Avoid impaired driving: plan ahead with a designated driver, taxi, or ride-share.

• Stay alert near school zones and parks during winter break.

• Clear windows and mirrors of frost and snow.

• Respect snow routes and parking bans to allow city crews to clear roads efficiently.

• Minimize distractions—phones down, attention on the road, especially in low visibility or winter glare.

For Cyclists

• Equip bikes for winter: wider tires and fully charged lights.

• Dress in warm, reflective layers for visibility and safety.

• Be cautious of snow ruts, black ice, and salted surfaces.

• Signal early and ride predictably; stopping distances are longer on icy roads.

• Clean and lubricate chains regularly to prevent salt damage.

For Pedestrians, Students, and Families

• Walk carefully on icy sidewalks and crosswalks—wear winter footwear with grip.

• Use reflective gear in dark mornings and evenings.

• Avoid shortcuts through unploughed areas; stick to cleared pathways.

• Keep eyes up and devices down; snowbanks and parked cars block sightlines.

• Parents: model safe behaviour and accompany younger children when crossing streets.

• Remind teens attending holiday gatherings to be mindful of traffic and visibility.

For Residents and Community Members

• Clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours.

• Ensure outdoor lighting is functional to guide pedestrians safely.

• Keep fire hydrants and storm drains clear.

• Assist elderly neighbours or those with mobility challenges.

• Report icy intersections or broken lights promptly.

• Be mindful of noise and parking during gatherings to maintain accessibility.

Community and Enforcement Updates

• Increased patrols throughout December to support safe driving and prevent impaired or distracted driving.

• Higher pedestrian traffic expected around community halls, markets, and places of worship.

• Snow route parking bans may be activated during heavy snowfall—watch for local alerts.

• City crews prioritize clearing high-traffic and school routes—plan extra travel time.

Avoiding Impaired Driving

Holiday parties and social gatherings increase the risk of impaired driving. Residents can stay safe through multiple options:

• Plan ahead with a designated driver or ride with sober friends.

• Use Calgary Transit bus and CTrain routes, including extended holiday schedules.

• Ride-sharing services such as Uber, Lyft, and local taxis.

• Alcohol monitoring apps to track intake and suggest safe alternatives.

• Event-specific shuttles at holiday markets and community events.

• Take-Home/“Keys Please” services: Operation Red Nose, volunteer driver programs for seniors, or pre-arranged designated drivers.

• Peer support: encourage friends and family to provide a ride if someone is impaired.

• Law enforcement: Calgary Police Service increases patrols and checkpoints during December.

Choosing a safe ride saves lives. Plan ahead and act responsibly before leaving any holiday event.

For any traffic or safety issues in the Killarney-Glengarry community, residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 or submit a request online. Increased submissions per resident and household help the city recognize and prioritize community concerns more effectively.

As we celebrate the holidays and welcome the New Year, let’s make safety part of the season. Drive carefully, walk mindfully, and assist neighbours when needed. Whether attending a holiday market, skating with family, or clearing your sidewalk, small acts of caution and kindness keep Killarney-Glengarry safe and welcoming.

Wishing everyone joyful, safe holidays and a peaceful December!
