What Do Motorcycles, Bicycles, and Pedestrians Have in Common in Kingsland?

At last, the sounds of summer have arrived! Coming out of a long, somewhat mild winter, Calgarians are ready to settle into the enjoyment of warm weather, flip-flops, and BBQs. For many, however, summer means trading the mode of transportation from four wheels to two – bicycles and motorcycles. These enthusiasts eagerly await the warmer months for the freedom their bikes bring them. Life is good!

Please Slow Down!

Motorcycle and bicycle safety in our neighbourhoods is critical and requires the focused efforts of both riders and the communities they travel through. The busy and often congested streets of residential and construction areas, present challenges for both motorcyclists and bicyclists alike.

For the past few years, Kingsland has seen an increase in construction in our residential areas as part of the City’s Densification Project. Navigating through these construction areas on a bike or motorcycle presents a unique challenge that requires heightened awareness and skill as construction zones often have reduced speed limits, sudden lane changes, uneven surfaces, and unexpected obstacles, all of which demand the rider’s full attention.

Making the Point

Last year, Calgary experienced five fatal motorcycle collisions, three of which involved speed by the motorcyclist. Please slow down!

For Those on Bicycles

A cyclist, much like their counterpart riding the motorcycle, bears a significant responsibility for maintaining safety on the roads as well. Following the rules of the road is crucial, not only for the rider’s safety but also for the safety of others sharing the road. Signaling turns, stopping at stop signs, and adhering to traffic signals make bicyclists’ actions predictable to motorists, pedestrians, and other cyclists. This predictability is key in preventing accidents!

Whether riding a pedal or motorized bike, cyclists must always be mindful of their speed, especially in areas where children may be playing near the roadway. Kingsland has only two playgrounds and both are located on busy residential streets. The importance of adhering to safety protocols cannot be overstated. By following the rules and reducing the risk of accidents, we all stay safe.

Talking to the Pedestrian

The responsibility for road safety is not solely borne by those with wheels. Pedestrians, too, are expected to exercise due care when navigating roadways as well. Staying alert, avoiding distractions like smartphones when crossing streets, and making eye contact with drivers at intersections can significantly reduce risks. Moreover, using designated crossing points and sidewalks where available is a simple yet effective way to decrease the likelihood of accidents.

BTW – Did You Know?

Pedestrians have the right of way at a crosswalk unless a peace officer or traffic control device directs otherwise. This means that even if the crosswalk is unmarked, vehicles must stop and yield to pedestrians. Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk can result in an $810 fine and four demerit points. However, a pedestrian crossing a roadway outside a crosswalk must yield the right of way to vehicles.

Whether riding or walking, by staying vigilant, and having patience and respect for each other’s right to use the road, we can all contribute to a safer and healthy community.

Coming Back to the Question: What Do Motorcycles, Bicycles, and Pedestrians Have in Common in Kingsland? Answer: Construction Zones!

Residential construction zones are a common feature in Calgary and the north end of Kingsland is no exception. Construction zones bring with them unfamiliar sights and sounds, not to mention the inconvenience of Detours. Whether your mode of transportation is two wheels or two legs, one of the biggest problems with these construction zones is the distractions they bring! Anytime you approach one of these areas, it’s important to always keep in mind that distractions can make you invisible to others! Never presume you are seen! Staying vigilant whether riding a bike, a motorcycle or just walking, is paramount to staying safe.

And that’s the point – let’s all do our part, no matter where we are, to have a fun-filled summer!
