Community Connector Message
As we move further into the rhythm of spring, it’s inspiring to see how small acts of involvement continue to strengthen our community. Whether it’s showing up to an event, sharing an idea, or simply offering a warm hello, each of us plays a part in shaping the kind of neighbourhood we all want to live in.
This month, we’re turning our attention to the power of shared spaces. Community isn’t only built at big events – it grows in the everyday places where people feel safe to gather, talk, and be themselves. A park bench conversation, a shared table at a local café, or a relaxed evening of games can become the moments that help someone feel like they truly belong.
Thinking about getting to know your neighbours a little better? Hosting a block party or an outdoor party for your condo is a wonderful way to spark connection right outside your front door. It doesn’t have to be elaborate – a few lawn chairs, some simple snacks, and an open invitation can go a long way. If you’ve ever thought, “Someone should organize something on our street,” maybe that someone is you! SECA is here to help make it easy, with guidance, resources, and support to get you started. Let’s turn streets into gathering places and neighbours into friends.
Community is not a finished product – it’s something we build month by month, conversation by conversation. Thank you for being part of that ongoing story. Together, we’re creating a place where everyone feels seen, valued, and at home.

Third Annual Picnic in the Park – June 20 | Noon to 2:30 pm
Save the date for our favourite community tradition! Residents of Shawnee Slopes, Shawnee Park, Evergreen Estates—and their guests—are invited to an afternoon of great food, music, and family fun. Enjoy a free BBQ plus popsicles and ice cream treats. Back by popular demand: a live five-piece band, a Youth Zone, giant inflatable obstacle course and target game, roving circus artists, face painting and glitter tattoos, art activities, and more. No charge—donations are welcome. We can’t wait to celebrate summer together in the “Rainbow Park” on Evergreen Drive SW!
Community Cleanup – September 12 | 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
Save the date, save the cost of a trip to the dump, and put things in the right place! SECA earns a rebate for recycled electronics so please save up your electronics for this event – if you are able. Also on hand will be metal and tire recyclers, and we’ll be collecting used books in good condition for our network of Little Free Libraries. Cerebral Palsy Alberta will collect quality used clothing, accessories, small household items, and recyclable beverage containers.
Garden Club – Save the Date!
Join us on Friday, April 24 for a special Garden Club conversation circle. Guests will share hands-on knowledge about soil health and composting. Climate Hub representatives will share ways to get involved in local garden initiatives. Together, we’ll dream and plan what we’d love to see in our community garden. Everyone will leave with seeds, mini pods, and compost – plus information about other Calgary gardens and details about funding available to help communities grow their own garden spaces. Time and location are to be determined. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in attending.
If you haven’t already, fill out the Interest and Skills Survey to let us know how you would like to be involved in the Garden Hub, by scanning the QR code.

Calling Young Adults: Help Make Our Community More Youth-Friendly!
Looking for a meaningful (and genuinely fun) way to get involved in the community? We’re inviting young adults to help create welcoming, youth-friendly spaces by volunteering at our Game and Gather events!
As a volunteer, special skills or game-night expertise isn’t required- just a friendly presence, a willingness to hang out, and an openness to connecting across ages. This is a great chance to:
· Build relationships with local teens
· Meet other young adults who care about community
· Help shape a space where youth feel they belong
· And, of course, play some games, have some fun and enjoy the free pizza!
Strong communities don’t happen by accident – they grow when people show up for one another. If you’re interested in helping out, learning more, or just curious, I’d love to hear from you. Come be part of creating something positive, welcoming, and youth driven.
Let’s make community a place where everyone – especially young people – feel at home.
