The Federation of Calgary Communities—A Network That Strengthens Us All
The Mount Royal Community Association does not operate in isolation. Behind every community association in Calgary is a broader organization dedicated to support, education, and advocacy. This month, we shine a light on the important role played by the Federation of Calgary Communities, and why our affiliation with this umbrella organization benefits every resident of Mount Royal.
The Federation of Calgary Communities is a non-profit society that supports over 150 community associations across Calgary. It was created to help neighbourhoods like ours thrive by offering resources, training, advice, and connections to City departments and other community partners. In short, the Federation helps us function effectively and ensures that we have access to the tools and knowledge needed to meet the challenges of running a vibrant community association.
MRCA board members regularly attend Federation training sessions and workshops. These sessions cover everything from board governance and financial oversight to event planning, risk management, insurance, and volunteer engagement. When new directors join the MRCA board, the Federation provides onboarding materials and access to professional development. This support means that our board can operate transparently and strategically, ensuring that your membership fees are used wisely and your input is respected.
The Federation also provides expert assistance with legal questions, land use policy, and development issues. As Mount Royal faces increasing interest from developers, our planning and development committee turns to the Federation for guidance on zoning, heritage protection, and best practices for community engagement. This helps us respond thoughtfully and confidently when changes are proposed that may affect the character or liveability of our neighbourhood.
Another major benefit is the shared knowledge and community network the Federation facilitates. MRCA has the opportunity to connect with other associations across Calgary to learn from their successes and challenges. Whether it is coordinating a city-wide initiative, collaborating on grant proposals, or sharing ideas about effective programming, the Federation makes it possible for neighbourhoods to work together rather than in silos.
One of the most important annual events hosted by the Federation is the Celebration of Community, which honours the volunteers, leaders, and residents who make Calgary’s neighbourhoods strong. Mount Royal residents and board members have proudly participated in this event and have been recognized for their leadership. It is a powerful reminder that while each community is unique, we are all part of something bigger.
For residents, the value of this connection may not always be visible. But it is deeply woven into everything we do. The newsletter you are reading, the website you visit for updates, the insurance that covers our events, the grant applications we submit, and the procedures we follow in financial reporting are all guided by the resources and standards developed through our Federation membership.
Your annual MRCA membership supports this relationship. A portion of every membership helps cover administrative and operational costs that ensure our compliance with Federation standards. More importantly, your participation enables us to remain part of a city-wide network that strengthens neighbourhoods, empowers volunteers, and protects what matters most in our community.
