Why Membership Is the Cornerstone of a Strong Community
Every community association relies on the strength and support of its members. While events, programs, and facilities are often the public face of a neighbourhood association, it is the annual act of joining or renewing your membership that sustains everything behind the scenes. This April, we want to talk openly about why your membership in the Mount Royal Community Association is so important—and what it makes possible.
Membership in the MRCA is open to anyone who lives in Upper or Lower Mount Royal, whether you are a homeowner, renter, student, senior, or business tenant. It is a simple but meaningful way to show that you care about your neighbourhood. It is also a tangible contribution to the long-term health and vibrancy of the community.
Many residents assume that the MRCA is funded by the City or by large grants. While we do receive support from various partners, the foundation of our annual budget comes from membership fees, rental income, and community donations. These funds allow us to pay for essentials like insurance, utilities, snow removal, website hosting, rink maintenance, and communications. Without consistent member support, our ability to operate year-round would be severely limited.
Membership also allows us to qualify for matching grants and City partnership programs. These grants are competitive and often require proof that the association has strong community backing. When we apply for funding to upgrade the hall, maintain public gardens, or run seasonal programming, your membership helps us demonstrate that Mount Royal is a well-supported and engaged neighbourhood.
But membership is more than a funding mechanism. It is a signal of civic participation. Members are eligible to vote at the Annual General Meeting, help set priorities, and contribute to decisions that affect the community. Members can also join committees or run for a board position. If you care about heritage conservation, traffic safety, local events, or youth programming, there is a role for you to play—and it starts with membership.
Joining is easy and affordable. Most memberships are just twenty-five dollars per household per year, and the impact far outweighs the cost. Members receive priority invitations to events, access to member-only programming, discounts on hall rentals, and timely updates on neighbourhood news. More importantly, members make it possible for us to plan with confidence.
Every year, a small number of committed volunteers do a large amount of work to maintain the quality of life in Mount Royal. But even the most dedicated board needs a base of support. When you become a member, you become part of that base. You make our job easier. You increase our capacity. You keep the lights on and the rink maintained. You help us welcome new neighbours and advocate for thoughtful planning. You make Mount Royal what it is.
This April, we encourage all residents to visit www.mrca.ca/membership and sign up. If you are already a member, thank you. If you are not, please consider joining this month. Talk to your neighbours. Invite others to participate. A community is only as strong as the people who invest in it.
Join today. Your membership matters. It always has—and it always will.
