Development and Traffic Report

I would just like to highlight what has been happening/going on behind the scenes this past month, in no particular order:

1. Our Class 1 Estimate to repair the hall has arrived and is significantly more than the initial estimate. At over $700,000 including GST, we are looking for additional grant funding. This has been an extremely frustrating process to say the least. Fingers crossed that we are able to access additional grants.

2. We met with the Richmond Green Park design team in January and are looking at some potential changes to the park plan to allow for a cricket net and a cycling area. Tennis courts may need to be provided in Killarney. We appreciate that the team has committed to some further engagement to address our concerns.

3. We are seeing a number of development applications coming in for Currie. While we are pleased to see more construction commitments, the applications are coming in with less than half the required number of parking stalls. (Less than 1 stall is required per unit to begin with.) Developers are arguing that they are creating “affordable” units as per the CMHC requirements. To put this in perspective, for an “affordable” 500 square foot unit, they will be charging $1,700 per month, and the building will be purpose-built rentals. This is not the affordable housing we have been pushing for in Currie. Unless the units are truly affordable, we will be pushing for the minimum required parking.

4. Our monthly Board meetings continue to be open to the public. We have made a slight change in that if you are wanting to speak at a Board meeting, we ask that you email [email protected] with point form notes about what you would like to discuss. This should be done a minimum of three days in advance of the meeting. Our meetings are the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm and are currently being held in the Sarcee Meadows office until our hall is repaired.

5. The Atco Lands are being revised once again. We will continue to push for a grocery store and walkable retail area. We have also been seeking a density cap for the number of units, as well as height maximums for the area.
