SECA Report for April

Shawnee Evergreen cn EVG MR

Exciting news! SECA has been selected as one of 11 organizations partnering with the Building Connected Communities project at the Community Development Learning Initiative (CDLI) and that means a Community Connector is coming to our neighbourhood! So, what does a Community Connector do? Their mission is to engage with residents, strengthen local connections, and uncover community strengths, opportunities, and resources. They will help us build a more connected and vibrant community right here in Shawnee Evergreen.

Join us for the last Community Campfire of this season on April 26 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, at the “Soccer Park” on Evergreen Circle SW. We’ve added a new ingredient to our proven campfire recipe; Calgary Recreational leaders will lead active games in the field. Start practicing your three-legged racing skills now! You won’t want to miss this event! This year we thank Cardel Homes, and the Ward Community Event Fund grant through Dan McLean’s Ward 13 Office for their financial support.

Save These Dates:

1. Our second annual Picnic in the Park will be a little earlier this year. Join us on June 7 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the “Rainbow Park” on Evergreen Drive SW. We’re bringing back the most popular activities from last year and adding new activities to provide a fun mix.

2. SECA’s fundraising Casino is scheduled for June 22 to 23, 2025, at the nearby Deerfoot Inn & Casino. Resident volunteers are needed to fill 36 volunteer shifts over the two-day event. Please email [email protected] be a part of this fun and very valuable fundraising event.

SECA 55+ Programs: Join us every Thursday from 9:15 to 11:15 am at Peace Lutheran Church (14640 6 St SW). Children’s Programs: More Bushcraft and SOGO Adventures sessions for kids are planned for May and June. Watch for posters and social media updates to register.

Volunteers are Needed: We continue to look to our very capable residents to volunteer on our task teams, committees, and on the board of directors. Let us know how you would like to get involved to make a difference right here where you live. Please reach out to [email protected] to start the conversation. A wide variety of skills sets are needed for SECA to move ahead in a timely manner with the many projects underway.

Shawnee Park 2025 Construction Program (Provided by Cardel Homes): The 2025 construction season will be a busy one in Shawnee Park as construction will progress further in two areas. First, a 43-lot phase south of Shawnee Drive and north of Shawnee Blvd; and second, two new phases north of Shawnee Drive. The two phases north of the Drive will be built over two seasons. Season one will focus on Shawnee Drive and complete all work within the existing road. Season two will concentrate on internal phase work and mostly occur “behind fences”. The aim of the two-season program is to restrict most of the traffic impacts to season one.

The season one work in Shawnee Drive requires utility “tie ins” to live utility pipes in three locations and surface improvements to an active road including construction of the new roundabout at Shawnee Boulevard and Shawnee Drive. This will require road closures, detours, and coordination with a small group of homeowners to ensure services are available throughout the process.

Cardel is still working with the City and its contractor, Volker Stevin, to finalize the schedule, but they anticipate most work will occur during the summer months, again hoping to reduce impacts to residents. Construction of the roundabout will likely happen last and will stretch into the fall.

Cardel is planning to meet with the most affected homeowners in May to ensure that plans are well communicated with hopes to hold an open house in June to share more information related to traffic closures and detours. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact the Cardel Homes office at 403-258-1511 and ask for Jeremy Pires or Neil MacKimmie.

Let’s Grow Something Amazing Together! A group of passionate gardeners is working to bring community gardens to SECA, with the first garden planned for the large park on Evergreen Drive. A plot plan is in the works, and we’d love your input on a plan that will be integrated with a Community Hub. Keep an eye out for “Pop-Up” info stands at the park to see the vision come to life. Want to get involved—now or in the future? Have ideas to share? We’d love to hear from you! Email [email protected] to connect.
